Ok guys, well right now I'm thinking of hollowing out a phonebook. Before you tell me I need hardcover boks, I don't wanna hear it. I have a friend who has a hollowed out phone book but won't tell me how. =( So any advice on going about this?

And, how do I get inside of a speaker to hide some contraband?? There are no screws or anything on this thing, how do i Get inside of it. I'm talking a big stereo speaker that I have in my room.

I think that's it...any input on either idea would be nice. Please and thanks.

just cut a hole into a phonebook. how hard can it be? be sure to compress the edges so the pages dont slip when you cut into it with something sharp like an exacto knife or something

To get into most speakers, you need to remove the screws around the woofer and pull it out. The cabinet is probably glued together.

...well, unless you have a pair of KLH 19's, in which case the woofer is epoxied in and the only way to get inside is to cut a hole. But if you have those, you should be selling them and not cutting them up.

Glue the pages together before you start cutting, that'll help prevent them from tearing when your knife goes dull and start ripping the paper. Use watered down PVA glue, glue a few cm's or so in from the edge, and put something smooth and heavy on top of the book before the glue sets as that'll help prevent the pages from warping.
Use a box cutter or jigsaw for the cutting, and leave about a cm of the pages uncut from front and back to add stability, glue those pages together.

That's about it.

I just c-clamped a hard back together. I guess you could just put a piece of plywood over and under the book to put the clamps on. The add a healthy amount of glue to the edges of the pages and let it soak into them. Leave for a few days to dry.

^^The C-clamps would work just as well as the weight I mentioned, and it'd make the whole deal a lot easier to handle but I didn't have any clamps at hand.

I'd make at least one test before gluing from the outside - I tried it and the glue didn't soak in deep enough although that might have something to do with a paper quality as I didn't use a phone book.

Another concern is if the glue will alter the appearance of the edge of the pages; if you're soaking from the outside the texture could change I imagine, can you clarify RPD?

And while I'm at it - you're welcome WSS.

I wish I still had mine so I could take a pic. I tired it with elmers glue and water 1:1 and it worked well - wasn't perfect tho. I also tried with rubber cement and it formed a clear plastic film-like thing on the edges and maybe 1/4" into the pages. I'd just get a phone book and do a few tests around the edges. If you keep it tight enough together there shouldn't really be any room for warping.

^^And that's the kind of info that should be in thread like this!

I have no idea if I'll ever hollow out a book again but if needed at least I'll know where to find the tips; hopefully some young aspiring book-hollower will find the info useful, thanks on behalf of everyone.*.:)

*EDIT: But don't let that hold you back, people.;)

A dremel will also make short work of cutting through that phonebook.

Depends on who you're hiding it from, but yeah those are pretty bad.

At least he's moved past his toilet tanks.

Reggie, Virus, would you perhaps then suggest some good places to stash my "contraband"?

There is a book called how to hide anything, i am sure you can find it for free if you look hard enough. Also what about wall sockets?

Oh and here is a semi decent guide on hollow books: http://www.instructables.com/id/secret-book/

Awesome, I actually did this and wrote it up for my site a while ago!

http://www.funthrax.com/included/generic.php?name=Ultra_secret_hiding_place&path=projects

Now would be a good time to upload the pics of the finished product. Basically, I made a water/glue mixture, painted it on till it was solid, then drilled through and then used a jigsaw to cut out the square. Fuck using an exacto knife.

I'll upload them in a bit!
