I want to put an fm radio in the bathroom to listen to when I do my business. now what I'm worrying about is can steam malfunction the radio?

Moving to DIY.

Yes, the condensation will corrode the PCB inside and soften the paper cone of the speaker. Steam and humidity alone most likely won't do a thing but the condensation will do the damage.

You could put it in a freezer bag to prevent the humidity getting to it, or buy a cheap shower radio. These have PCBs potted in resin and Mylar cone speakers to stop damage.

Especially toxic shits have also been known to corrode PCBs...:D

How about a regular plastic shopping bag?

I don't think a plastic bag would work because the sound would get muffed inside the bag, unless it was like one of those small clock radios..

Anyway, in the 90's for a brief time I had a Sega Genesis and like a 17 inch tv in my bathroom.

Steam and condensation don't harm electronics much, because pure water isn't conductive. Aside from the paper cone, I think it will be fine. Besides, radios are only a couple dollars these days. It's worth the price--for science!

yes it is

yes it is

not very
test it. put two electrodes in a beaker of water and try to light a lightbulb, omg, no good. Now put salt in the water. Omg it works
I could further explain this, because I only roughly did so but there is no point

I know this

My point is that Spatula Tzar said that water is not conductive at all, which is wrong.

I've had a cheap little radio in my bathroom for years and it's never fucked up. I take it out of the bathroom when I'm not in there and leave it by the door so not exposed to steam for longer than needed.

Why don't you just get magazines to read while you shit? Or position a stereo speaker outside the bathroom?

I also listen to the radio when I'm showering.

that's what I've been doing

I have a decent set of speakers that my brother got for cheap (2 Altec Lansing speakers, and a woofer for $10 after open-box discount and staff discount.) and I've used for a year or so. The only thing I take in and out with me is my iPod, just because I use it for other stuff too. Even with me and my two brothers taking a daily shower each, as well as the speakers positioned on a high shelf, they still sound the same as they did when I purchased them.

If you're really worried about this, just take the radio out when you shower, or put it in plastic.

Why do people need newspapers or radio when they shit? Seriously, it takes me about a minute to shit.

Spatula Tzar said that water is not conductive at all, which is wrong.

Yes, yes, I know the self-ionisation of water gives it an electrical conductivity of about 5.5 · 10-6 S/m, but this is so minuscule in the scope of the voltages present in a radio as to be negligible.

Then you don't fully apreciate the wonder that is taking a shit. I suspect you to be female. J'ACCUSE!

I mostly use the bathroom radio for taking a shower. Actually, I use the shower for taking a shower but the radio plays in the background.
