Respones tainted by selfish motivations?

Is finally doing what you truely want with yourself/life as a response to regret and guilt more or less satifying as if you had done it when you wanted. Does the regret and/or gulit taint the actions making them a sad response to selfish feelings no matter how fullfilling and personally rewarding the responding action?

I think it would be fucked up to punish myself with guilt for the things I've done. Even if I see my actions as a bad choice in hindsight, I would have to be ignorant of the fact that post knowledge wasn't present at the time, and to punish myself for things I didn't think of at that time, would be a mentally unhealthy thing that could lead me to depression. I had depression for a decade because of self inflicted guilt. Fuck that idealistic nonsense that we're supposed to strive to be better people. Accepting yourself despite the choices you've made, and learning from them, is what makes a good person. Hating yourself for your actions, and feeling guilty for them, isn't being a good person.
