I was always hung up on this thought: Why are we having way more sex in the last century than ever before? People are having way more sex with way more partners than described in virtually all historical texts. (yeah there's exceptions, egypt, rome)
I think sex today is differant back then for a number of reasons. First off, effective birth control became popular (duh). But implementations go further. Way back when, sex was much more serious because women often died in child birth. You dare not fuck your wife unless your willing to loose it for an offspring.
Once this changed due to child birth and other advances in modern science, peoples views on sex began to change. In America you started first seeing changes in 1920's, but public opinion changed most during the "sex revolution" of the '60s and '70s.
What do you guys think?

Contraception made it possible to have sex for recreation instead of procreation.
That was difficult to figure out :/

Don't know if I'd go along with the statement that we are having more sex than our ancestors.

Jack...Remember...Every generation invents sex. Nobody has ever done it like the way the kids do it now!
I was having a charming conversation with my old man about this in the pub last night...And he said "Every generation invents sex like its something new. I'll tell you mate, anything you can think of, I've already done!"
Then we proceeded to share amusing stories about past experiences.
Father/Son time. Nowt like it!

What he said. It just wasn't at the forefront of the media, in our faces all the time back then. And yeah, there was a lot more repression of it during certain eras when being different meant you could be killed. But it's one big false "reinvention" cycle like pyscho_8b said.
Contraception made it possible to have sex for recreation instead of procreation.

Probably did it more in the ancestral times given they had more time on their hands.
Probably didn't feel guilty about it either..

Actually, those are the rule, not the exception.
What you're comparing to, really, is only the recent past. The Victorian era was, if you will, the peak of sexual repression - but it was also somewhat of a fallacy, merely an attempt to keep man's inner desires from public sight (read "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" for more insight).
Wanna know what's really caused our current taboo and subsequent obsession with sex?

Actually, people in the past did used to have tons of sex, as a form of insurance. The more sex you had, the more children you were likely to have, and since many children died within the first year or two of life, you had to take precautions to make sure you'd have enough people in your family to both work and to take care of you and your spouse when you got too old to go out to the fields every day. Also, life most likely sucked a lot back then, so sex was a form of stress relief as well.

Actually, I think we have less sex today than we did in the past.
First off, a history lesson. Birth control is not a modern invention at all. There are a few natural herbs and seeds that if consumed, stop a women from releasing eggs. Only modern birth control is modern. Birth control has been used since ancient times. There's also sodomy too, which is the best birth control.
Now the reason why I say we have less sex now, is because of women's rights. Before women's rights, men got sex whenever they wanted to. Women had no choice. Consent, or be raped, that's the only two choices women were given. There were no sob stories back then of guys complaining their wife didn't want to put out. Women did what they were told, or were slapped around for disobedience by their husbands. Also, people had sex at younger ages back then. People cringe at the idea of 14 yo having sex these days, but in the past, pedophilia was normal. Most women were married by 15, or were used as prostitutes in some cultures.
Sex was much more common place, even in public up until the Victorian era. If you wanted to do your old lady in an alley way, go ahead, there were no laws saying you couldn't.
And finally, and idiot can see by this forum, most people aren't having much sex anymore, as half of what is discussed here is how to get more pussy. I'd say we get a fraction of the same amount of sex in our lives, and if it is even, it's only cause we live so long these days.

The Romans had sex all the time. It was quite normal for a two individuals to have intercourse in an alley way and passersby wouldn't even give a second look.

.
Even in the victorian era it was quite common. It was the middle classes who went all 'cover up the table legs as not to inflame men's baser passions'. Down the East End public knee tremblers with a 2d whore were the order of the day , which is why all the middle class men went down there to relieve themselves of their tensions.

No, the OP is correct. I know for a fact that my mother NEVER had sex with anyone, no... not even my father; ask any of my two sisters and three brothers. We were all born of imaculate conception. I can prove it!
What bothers me most about this thread is the concept that people who were not even born by the time I started having sex can tell those of us who lived long before them can pontificate about what we did, what we felt and who we were intimate with can preach to us about how much or how often we may have engaged in sexual intercourse, simply based upon what they may have read or have themselves experienced.
If you have a question about how it was before you were born, by all means ask us. But Please do NOT try to preach to us about how things were before you were ever conceived, let alone born.
Thanks!

if theres ever a reason for more sex now its documentation. Every little virgin shit needs to inform the interweb of his recent sexual intercourse. you think people wrote how they had to rape a girl to get sex back then. fuck that the church woulda been all up in there asses. no sex is much better left behind closed doors as it was then.

Folks, this does not always work!
I think Jesus serves as a pretty good example.
