The title sums up my question rather nicely, no? I'm curious as to what literary characters you all find most endearing-- be it the character's attitude, their behaviour, their eccentricities, etc etc..

Me personally, I'd have to say Ignatius J. Reilly, the morbidly obese, self-absorbed, neurotic, hysterical, eccentric, perverted antihero of late author John Kennedy Toole's book 'A Confederacy of Dunces'. I do think it's the funniest thing I've ever read. The author uses dialogue to such a brilliant tee that you can't help from bursting out laughing when Ignatius decides to start shouting out his latest rants about anything from child dancers to movie flicks. The character, Ignatius, is just absolutely swell; brilliant.

Note: On a deeper level, I figure I see my own personality in Ignatius', and while that is rather humorous to entertain as a though, it's a bit off putting to know :/

How 'bouts y'all?

Edmond Dantes. I could really connect to that guy, how he was betrayed, his development, fueled by a single purpose.

If we're talking about literary badasses, i would nominate Aloysius Knight from Scarecrow

Roland Deschain (Or Roland of Gilead) from the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. He just seems to me like a fatherly sort of figure, but not in the conventional way. Iunno.

Lucifer. He's quite an intriguing character that evokes both sympathy (for his attack against a raging tyrant) and antipathy (for his unrelenting evil and hatred of humanity) at the same time. He's something of an anti-villain in my mind.

Another great character is Dr. Benway. He's from many different William S. Burroughs novels. He's a doctor in the mad scientist vein, but written in that ridiculous WSB style so he is very entertaining.
