Of course I'm just a cadet, but I've recently joined the ROTC program for the USAF under scholarship conditions- which basically means that I'll be graduating college as a Second Lieutenant. I'm not going to be a "Managerial Officer," I'm going into communications, but it's still good nonetheless.

I'm pretty recent into the program, and I don't start until about a semester, I was just wondering if anyone out there can tell me what to expect. I did participate in basic enlisted military training, but I had to go halfway through because of an illness I contracted that held me behind. I didn't mind basic, it wasn't too difficult and it didn't make me feel that stressed out, but I don't know how long officer training is, and the setting I'm likely to be in.

I speak a couple different languages, Japanese and Russian, and I'm learning German- am I likely to be sandboxed? My brother's enlisted in the USAF, as IT, and he said that under current stop-loss regulations they can keep me as an officer as long as they want, is he full of shit? Say I get stationed in Japan, can I bring my wife?

I'm still trying to decide if this is a troll thread or if you're a cadet that's implying that GIs who have more leave saved up than you have time in the system should address you as "Sir".

It just sounds almost feasible either way. You were fairly decent in the post, but the presentation just screams "Troll" and/or "FNG", given the site you posted this on and the fact that a lot of college boys really are like that.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that. No one needs to address me as sir, I don't have my wings, yet, and I have no right to demand any sort of respect from the enlisted. The title was a joke. Obviously if someone was answering my query, they would have already completed some form of officer training and/or supervised it. I already have a ridiculous amount of respect for the enlisted and warrant officers from the time I spent at BASIC- I don't expect to be called sir.

However, at basic training they do make it a point to have you address people as "sir" until they teach rank.

Enlisted BMT-Basic Military Training, and OTS-Officer Training School, are entirely different.

Though I think cadets go to BMT and roll alongside with the instructors while they're pushing flights to learn about the enlisted force structure.

Also, on a personal note, I have much more respect for someone who's a prior enlisted officer than a straight-to-collar butter bar who doesn't know what its like to take orders. Even if it's an A1C to 2LT, I think they deserve more respect than a N-PE CPT.

Not like I skimp on customs and courtesies, but a lot of N-PE officers are DICKS.

Well, I know that officers and enlisted aren't really allowed to talk with each other, or be friendly to one-another. Officers command respect in the form of salutes and formal gestures, but lets face it, that's not how things are. I knew so many enlisted POs who felt resentment towards officers- AND VOCALIZED THAT TO US. When I actually met the officers I could see why. With separate training facilities, dorming facilities, and a typically less-stressful job, the enlisted had a reason to be a little upset.

However, when I decided to re-enter as an officer, I figured that, while I couldn't get emotionally invested in my subordinates, I'd try not to be such a gigantic fucking tool.

Yeah, we had one. He tried too hard. Eventually, they sent him to another rainbow flight that just arrived.

Call me Sgt. And suck my wang. You're still below me in rank, obviously. And I'm not in the service anymore, so I could care less XD

And the reason we didn't like the officers, as most of them had no real life, combat experience. That makes a huge fucking difference if you're in command of a bunch of soldiers. If you come in green, you'll be attached with an NCO at the hip. I never had that displeasure as my short stint as an NCO, but it's helpful to that officer.

And no, you won't go to the sandbox. We're trying to get the fuck out of there. A few more units have went in as replacements, but command will stay with who's over there already would be my guess.

I'd be more concerned with going to Afghanistan. That's where I was. All they are doing in Iraq are patrols and shit. Whoopidy do. Not much action there anymore.

Regardless, good luck. The officer life isn't for me, had no interest in it. I did my time, I'm out, probably won't be going back... Unless Russia goes crazy, I still have a year left of reserve term. They better not do anything stupid.
