I'm familiar enough with the classics, but I really don't know much about bands with a bebop sound these days.

dude, the seatbelts are fucking amazing. the name comes from the fact that "the performers wear seatbelts to be safe while they play hardcore jam sessions." Most (all) of their music is composed by Kanno Yoko, a well know composer for anime shows. Unfortunately, her work with the seatbelts is pretty much the extent of her foray into the world of Jazz.

Yeah, they're pretty extensive in the music they've put out. I don't think I'd actually consider them a "bebop" band or even really a "jazz" group, but that song is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, with a bit more improv, or free-flow lyrics.
