A fictional character in a a short story I am writing has recently acquired a cash register that includes a barcode scanner and receipt printer. What bad idea could my character carry out with this? Specifically, how would he turn a profit with this thing?

You wouldn't be able to do much in the way of return fraud (printing a fake receipt and trying to get cash back for something straight off the shelf)...most stores don't just check items on the receipt and give you cash back. Receipts all scan back into the computer records and verify the purchase shown was legitimate. Unless you go to small time places like dollar stores that use cheap paper receipts with no computerized purchase tracking...but no luck at Walmart, Target, and any other major retailer.
About the only thing I can think of is if you find someone's discarded, crumpled receipt and can print a brand new copy of it, then pull that item off a shelf and return it. And hope LP isn't watching you do it. But the odds are against finding a lost receipt for something expensive.

Not much. Unless you can change the header on the receipt to look EXACTLY like one from a store you want to scam.

Itd take some bigass balls, but you could probably get away with it if you went to a relatively small mall.

how about printing off a fake receipt, taking an item off a shelf, and walking out the store. If someone at the exits questions you show them your receipt. Plausible?

this is probably the best idea imo
setting up a receipt for the right time and having everything legit (time barcode id name phone number etc)
at my local walmart, you can walk past the cashiers to the customer service line to buy your stuff there
just walk up there as though you already paid for the item and get in line (SHOULD BE BUSY)
And then have your receipt there, ask them something customerservicey like hours of operation on so&so date
if they ask if you already bought the [insert expensive item here], say yes but the cashier didn't know the answer to the question i just asked so i came here to ask it
then walk out with the receipt on top of the box of the product as though you just paid for it
they will not question you if you are forcing the receipt into their faces as you leave the store
hope this makes sense/ helps

You'll have to check with the store, some stores log simply the store/time/date/register/cashier ect into the receipt, but some stores don't use the bar-code numbers of the product to enter it into the system rather they use their internal stocking number.
Real issue you're going to run into, most stores are running their own specific kind of paper getting a blank strip of that is tricky.
I don't think it'd take big balls, you're obviously enough of an ass to lie to people for money.

I have always thought you don't need a cash register, just maybe a receipt printer...
with some creative photoshop skills you could just scan a receipt and then edit the time and date and be able to just walk out with anything that is not locked up.
For it to be really effective you might have to buy the item first to see how it looks on the receipt. You might be able to just scan it at one of those check the price things.
This would only work really well in large stores costco, wal-mart etc

I remember my first time in BI. But, I wasn't as much of a faggot as you.

You might be able to re-task the thermal receipt printer to print barcodes onto barcode rolls. That would be very nice for wal-mart purposes.
