View Full Version : Why Sci Fi movies of the last 50 years have all sucked
An interesting article (http://slashdot.org/articles/07/03/23/1544256.shtml) from SlashDot. Pretty much, it's George Lucas's fault.
I have to agree, actually. Most of the recent scifi movies that WERE good, were based on earlier works like Minority Report and Spehere (just to name two)

i disagree. there have been some excellent sci fi in the last 20 years, let alone the last 50. let us not forget such great films as Terminator, Blade Runner, Aliens, Predator, and The Matrix.
Sure alot of shit has also come through in between those films. And many sequels were made that never should have been thought of. But alot of shit always comes thorough in between the gold. prior to Lucas's opera there was a vast cornucopia of shitty sci fi. No one blamed george for those films though. no they only blame him for the recent garbage.
well i think that is unfair. if we want some one to blame for the current lack of imagination we should only look at ourselves. if you dont like the way Hollywood is going then you do something about it. take all this free time you have an write the next great sci fi film. touch on the human condition. speak about love an beauty. but dont blame some man, some thing he is not responsible for. that does not bring us any where, it only holds us back.

Why would you even waste your time posting such a worthless piece of shit reply? Was it funny? No. Was it clever? No. Was it intelligent? No. What it interesting? No.

ROFLMFAO!!!!
George Lucas is a fuckin genius and one of the greatest story tellers ever, and here's the nerd herd trying to dog his accomplishments.
Who else has told their story starting from the middle, then the ending, and then finishing up with the "beginning" of the saga? Oh yeah, and along the way he's managed to line his pockets with a couple of BILLION dollars here and there....in the middle of him "ruining" the genre.
And OF COURSE the failures that are Zok and Fish would find fault with such accomplishments......since they are the standard bearers in "creating anything worthy", ain't they?????

As any serious SF reader could tell you it is because The unHolywood mostly produces product for the masses, the LCD.
Very little of written SF revolves around violence and horror. Whereas unHoly is mostly about that.

I think Star Wars is too convenient a scapegoat. I blame the decline of sci-fi on the space race coming to an apex. Also Moore's law. Too many dreams died.

All big budget eye-candy blockbusters. Also, Blade Runner was VERY watered down from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. They completely removed the empathy box/Mercerism parts that really made the point about empathy more pronounced.

People don't pay for the truth. They pay to get jerked off. If they don't get jerked off right: they don't rave to their friends about the flick.
