I've got about 120cm of some Mg ribbon, but I'm not quite sure what I can do with it. Got any ideas Zoklet?

Light thermite, cut it up and add it to a fountain, or simply keep it for later use and rejoice over having 120 cm of something others can't necessarily just buy...:)

use it in a grignard reaction.

How did you get that?

Put it in the end of a cigarette for someone.

Yea i thought about thermite, but i still need aluminum powder. Putting it with black/flash powder would work though? What's that like?

Funny:mad:

Eh, you know, here and there.

Put it in the end of a cigarette for someone.
That would definitely not ignite it.

I'm afraid I don't follow you, if you ask if it'd work like thermite to mix Mg with BP or FP the answer is no, all you'd get is a brighter flash if the MG was powdered, if it's just cut up and mixed in with either BP of FP I'd expect you to get a few bright sparks flying when it goes.

No, I was not asking if that'd make thermite LOL.

I just wasn't sure if BP/FP would be a high enough temp. to ignite it. The answer is yes, I guess.

Do you think KMnO4 + Sugar would ignite Mg?

Remember that smaller bits are easier to ignite than larger.

I have no idea how hot your average smoke mix would burn, to the best of my knowledge it usually burns rather cold, but then again, I couldn't think of a reason as to why you'd try it out, for other reasons then the hell of it.

MG ribbon ignites around 630 °C, but I doubt your smoke mix gets that hot.

Smoke mix is KNO3 + Sugar. KMnO4 is potassium permanganate - those purple crystals that stain your skin.

^^I know, but it's a better oxidizer so I reckon it'd work at least just as good.

I've never played with KMnO4 in very large quantities but i don't recall it smoking much. Mix it with powdered sugar and put a few drops of, i think it was glycerin or brake fluid, on it and it'll ignite. I seem to recall it being recommended for lighting thermite mixes although i've never tried it so can't verify that it's true.

Well best use is for thermite which is a fun reaction. As far as KMnO4+sugar= smoke mix I don't think it really smoked to much when I tried it out. Also the liquid you are thinking of savage is Glycerin. Also im not sure about professional smoke mixes that you would find in consumer smoke bombs but KNO3+sugar smoke mix is not exactly a low temperature reaction.

If you have a way of milling the Mg it makes great Flash powder even with KNO3. Theres lots of things to do with that much Mg ribbon hell when I would get bored and had that much Mg ribbon I would just light some of it at night just for shits and giggles since it lights up a good area at night. Have fun with it and enjoy the fact you have some.
