For the last few weeks one of my friends has had about 1500 dollars and trying to think of ways to turn that into more money. I suggested he get the right materials and start making fake ids because there seems to be a pretty high demand for them where we live and he could probably make the money back in no time. Does anybody know what kind of things would he need to buy like printers, ink, holograms, and cards to start making good quality ones?

Possibly magstripe encoder

Thosee are most of the BASIC materials he might need
There are alternate ways of making them as well

I used to own a couple of the Eltron's about 9 years ago, and they both worked pretty well. But they weren't DL quality...the print resolution wasn't that good, you could tell easily it wasn't as clear as a real DL.

I've been looking at the ones on Ebay myself this weekend, and the Fargo Pro-L's look like a pretty good deal, about $200 - $500. You just have to sift through the crap auctions and make sure you ask if you're getting the ribbons, all the cords, the lamination roll, the magstripe encoder, the Smartshield option, everything. Most of the Ebay auctions are missing important parts and try to hide it through misleading wording. You can always buy a separate mag writer for another $100-ish, though. And don't worry if it's missing the software, you can download that from all over the web.

One other thing you have to realize is that the typical cards you'll print in these machines are way thicker than a real DL. The magstripe cards are cheap, at least (even if too thick)...you can get 100 of them for about $15 if you shop carefully.

I just wish I had $8000 to buy a Zebra 640i...according to the company, it's made for applications like DLs and military IDs...that might just be self-hype, though.

great info. For some reason I always assumed it took $20K+ to make pro IDs.

I am really looking for something in between the $250 one and the $8k Zebra 640i and an accurate guide for novelty ID noobs anyone got any good advice?
