What are some good hippy Festivals that go on thru the spring and summer? I know of Rothbury, burning man, and Cave Fest, but that's about it. Is there anywhere I can find a more complete and through list or does anyone here have any experience with these festivals?

Not that I've been, but it sounds like Bonnaroo is getting a bit too "corporate" if you will. Also I heard a rumour that Gathering of the Vibes had some nasty stuff last summer...like a rape and murder? I don't know, maybe it was just a rumour. I've heard good things about Mountain Jam (New York) if its in your area/price range.

Price won't be an object, I am going to see to that. I want to go to good ones, like with open air drug markets, lol.

I'm interested as well and you can always find local get togethers or raves, clubs, or bands/dj's that fit your interest playing in certain areas online.
It's helpful to have a city around. Facebook and things like that are too, but I rarely use them.

Bonnaroo was good a few years back when I went, before MTV bought it. As far as drugs go you can find those even at small festivals. Hookahville is another good one they have in Ohio. Hookahween and a few other times of year are pretty cool.

One of the best in Midwest can be found at Nelson's Ledges Quarry Park, which is southeast of Cleveland. It's very low key, there are festivals pretty much every weekend between April and October (some are much bigger and better than others), and... it's fucking Nelson's Ledges!
http://www.nlqp.com/
EDIT:
hah, just noticed the ^^ above thread is talking about Nelson's Ledges as well, fuck yea
I most recently went to Gory at the Quarry, their Halloween show. Halloween wasn't played up too much, but it was fun [when it wasnt raining] and BEAUTIFUL!!
EDIT AGAIN:
I'll do your work for you

So it's drugs and hippie music yer after ay? I think I may be of some help here... :D
BONNAROO (http://www.bonnaroo.com/)
Fuck the whole "Bonnaroo's gone corporate" thing. So what? All of my friends who went to the earlier Bonaroos make this statement any time the festival name is brought up. "It'll never be the same maaan." Fuck that. There's still A LOT of good music there. They've got a lot of big name acts which is cool, as well as all of the smaller groups and the hippie scene. And yes, the drugs are still there. They started out as a small hippie festival with the goal of turning into the biggest music festival in America, and they've achieved that goal. Good for them. I've never gone but this is strictly due to location.
ROTHBURY (http://www.rothburyfestival.com/)
Personally, I'd really recommend Rothbury. I'd peg Rothbury and Bonnaroo as the two largest 'hippie' music festivals in the country. However, Bonnaroo takes place in Tennessee during June. It's fucking hot in Tennessee during June. Hot, dusty, buggy, yuck. I'm not really a hippie and I don't like being dirty and sweaty. Rothbury takes place in northern Michigan, where the weather is manageable this time of year. I'd say the temperature never rose above 85 degrees the whole weekend this year. And I didn't get a single mosquito bite.
As for the grounds, Rothbury is a trippers paradise. To get to each stage, you have to walk through Sherwood forest. This is no ordinary forest. All the trees light up and change colors, there are crazy ass glowy things hanging all over, there are hammocks everywhere. There's a bunch of random things to please you in your chemically altered state of mind scattered throughout the forest for you to stumble upon. There are also secret stages in the forest that aren't on the map, that bands play shows at randomly. I can't put it into words. I'll attach a video, but even that won't do it justice.
Sherwood Forest
w5rI5XRan1Q
And the drugs... it literally is an open air market. I couldn't walk 20 feet in the camping area without being offered acid, cali weed, mdma, DMT, mushrooms, coke, ketamine, ganja treats, etc. Actually you don't even have to walk anywhere, just sitting at our campsite we were approached by at least 30 people offering goodies. People literally walk around and announce what they have to offer. Nitrous tanks wizzing everywhere you walk. And if you can't hear it, just follow the trail of people carrying balloons. Without exaggerating, I was probably offered drugs somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 times over the course of the weekend.
I'll put this video up too...my favorite moment of the entire weekend. I love The String Cheese Incident, it was their reunion show after a 2 year hiatus, I was peaking on 10 hits and some molly during this set, this is one of my favorite songs by them, the stage show was phenomenal, as was the energy of the crowd. It just doesn't get any better than this.

SUMMER CAMP (http://www.summercampfestival.com/2010/)
I see that you are from Chicago. Summer Camp takes place in Chillicothe, Illinois, which is right by Peoria. It's less than half the price of Rothbury, and I'd assume the drug scene is quite similar. It's a smaller festival, more intimate, which I think is a good thing. It's moe.'s festival, they play all 3 nights every year, as does Umphrey's McGee. There's also a barn which hosts late night shows each night. I plan on attending my first Summer Camp this year, some of my friends swear by it.
ALL GOOD (http://www.allgoodfestival.com/)
Another larger festival that takes place in West Virginia. What I like about All Good is that there are only two stages, and they alternate between stages throughout the day/night. This way you don't miss anyone you want to see. That's always the worst, when two or even three bands you want to see are playing in overlapping time slots.
CAMP BISCO (http://www.campbisco.net/09/)
Takes place in New York. This festival belongs to The Disco Biscuits. If you like electronic music, this is the fest for you. I've never been, but it's on my to do list (basically my things I'll do when I'm no longer poor list). Bisco kids get down on ALL drugs, they are notorious for this within the jam scene. Only thing you won't find here is nitrous. The security at Camp Bisco is run by a bunch of hard ass bikers. They turn a blind eye to anything but the gas, and will fuck you up if you are disrespectful.
GATHERING OF THE VIBES (http://gatheringofthevibes.com/2009/Home)
On the dead body - I've talked to several people who were there. The body was found at dawn, wrapped in a tarp. Some people claim that they saw a car drive by and dump it, and that there were chemical burns on the guys face. The story goes that this guy messed with the nitrous mafia and they beat him and burned the fuck out of his face with a tank. I don't know if I believe all that, but the body being wrapped in a tarp is confirmed. This suggests foul play, and I believe that the official story is most definitely a cover up.
For those not in the scene, the nitrous mafia is a large, well organized group of thugs from Philly (where nitrous laws make it very easily obtainable). They travel from festival to festival, from show to show, selling nitrous at jacked up prices. They use physical force to shut down anyone else selling gas, which are usually nice tour kids just trying to make cash for the next show. They're not there for the music, they do not fit in with the scene, they're basically gang members.
This photo was taken at a Red Roof Inn across the street from the Hampton Coliseum when Phish played there earlier this year. Two of them don't belong.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v61/devoiced/2009_gasattack.jpg
Yes - there is a lot of filth in this scene. Drug addicts, homeless wanderers, filthy parasitic hippies that will beg you for your last dollar and then ask for another. People who steal from campsites, overdoses and freakouts, people who take advantage of the ignorant/intoxicated, etc.. But there are shitty people in every walk of life. There's a lot more good than bad here, you just never hear about the good stuff. (I'm talking about the scene in general, not just GOTV. I only brought it up here because someone mentioned the death).
A slightly entertaining video of a group of GDF kids rallying against the nitrous mafia the day after the alleged murder at GOTV:

PHISH FEST (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phish_festivals)
Who knows when it will be, but sometime in the spring/summer/fall of 2010, somewhere in the good ol' US of A, Phish will hold another festival. These fests are MASSIVE, usually with more people in attendance than any other festival. The only difference is that the only band you are seeing is Phish. Also, if you're just looking for drugs, the parking lot at any Phish concert across the country is a prime location to score. When Phish played Chicago this summer, I easily scored plenty of acid and molly just by strolling around the parking lot sipping beers all day prior to the show. And I spent a good amount of cash on nitrous as well, lol.
MOE.DOWN (http://www.moedown.com/) - Another moe. fest in New York. One of my favorite bands too.
WAKARUSA (http://www.wakarusa.com/) - Large fest in Arkansas
HIGH SIERRA MUSIC FESTIVAL (http://www.highsierramusic.com/) - Another one in northern Cali
10,000 LAKES (http://www.10klf.com/) - This is a really popular festival out in Minnesota. For some reason it will not be taking place in 2010, but it's a good thing to remember for the future.
ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL (http://www.electricdaisycarnival.com) & ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL (http://www.ultramusicfestival.com/) - Strictly electronic. These aren't even hippie festivals, I only include them because the line ups fucking blow my mind. Every DJ I'd ever want to see all in one place. I'd really like to go to the electric daisy carnival in the future. Oh, and I'm sure you'd be able to find plenty of E and ketamine at these events. Ravers love that shit.
COACHELLA (http://www.coachella.com/) - Huge fest out in California. This is the only fest I've posted where I'm unsure what the drug scene would be like. Reminds me of Lollapalooza, in that they seem to have a lot of more mainstream artists. Drugs were hard to come by at Lolla. It took me 4 hours of asking everyone that looked 'down' before I found some pills for Daft Punk in 07. Obviously there will be lots of drugs there, I don't know how open the sales are though.
SHAMBHALA (http://www.shambhalamusicfestival.com/) - It is my fucking DREAM to attend Shambhala. It's located in British Columbia, Canada. Everything I have seen or heard in regards to this festival blows my mind. If it weren't for the 32 hour drive I would be all over it. It's just not possible for me right now however.
JAM CRUISE (http://www.jamcruise.com/2010/home.php) - Takes place on the sparkling open waters of the Caribbean. Just another distant dream my friend, haha.
CARIBBEAN HOLIDAZE (http://www.caribbeanholidaze.com/09/home.php) - Jam fest in Jamaica, lol.
JAM IN THE DAM (http://www.jaminthedam.com/) -....Amsterdam. Okay, I'm done with this fantasy shit haha.
All of these festivals offer the open air drug market atmosphere that you desire. I'd recommend Summer Camp or Rothbury to you, since they're closest. I'd really like to go to Rothbury again, but which festival I attend this summer all depends on the lineups, which usually aren't released for a few more months. String Cheese may be throwing their own fest this summer, either at Camp Zoe in Missouri or Horning's Hideout in Oregon. If that's the case I'll probably make the pilgrimage.
When it gets closer to festival season and you've decided where you're going, feel free to ask me any questions.

Do you know what the ticket prices are for Rothbury and Summercamp? How much money should I have saved up if I want to really "do it right", as well?

Summer Camp tickets are going for $120 right now, but that's early bird. After a certain amount of tickets are sold they will up the price. They may up it a few more times before the fest as well. I don't remember if they did this last year but a lot of events do. I paid $295 total for my Rothbury ticket last year, but they also had an early bird special. The thing with that is you don't know what the lineup is when you purchase your ticket. That's a huge no-no for me. I brought over $500 to Rothbury last year, and came home with $15. It really just depends on how much food/drugs you plan to consume over a 4 day period ;)

yes. Headies, boomers, and LSD are usually sold openly [relatively speaking]. People constantly roll by your campsite and offer them. Special K, whippets, and molly are generally also available on request from most dealers. At some festivals, there's an unspoken ban on whippets, or at least openly selling them. Ive never been offered or seen opiates at a festival, but maybe it's cuz I havent been looking.
Cigs and beer are, ironically, the more valuable/sought-after commodities, especially toward the end of the festival. People will sell packs of smokes for like $10. If you're smart, you'll stock up on these things beforehand. my friends and I basically bring a case of beer per person, plus some liquor and mixers for gittin' drunk.
I'd say it's typical for boomer/weed/lsd peddlers to roll up to your campsite, make some chit-chat, then ask if you need anything, ask for and/or offer a toke, but when they ask for beer:
Festival Goer: "You wanna hit this?"
Dealer: "Nah, man. I'm good, but I'll take a beer..."
Festival Goer [in their head = "yea right, buddy. keep walking - scram! -go! git outta here!!"] "Sorry, dude, we're out"
This at least in my experience, but then again, Im a beer swilling college student, so maybe Im just a huge jackass

what the fuck is wrong with west virginia? great scenery, plenty of outdoor activities, and the biggest part school in the nation. Honestly the worst part about all good being is WV is the fact that you have to drive through garret county MD to get there. they have the type of cop where if you get pulled over, you're getting searched.
all good is a good festival but last year was more like all hood. It seemed like every hour someone fucked up on K or Meth or whatever came up to me and talked about how he got all of his shit stolen. and i was lucky enough to be camped near the nitrous mafia. but this was the first year it was like that. Really, though, you don't want to go to a festival that Bob Weir and Ratdog are playing at, first off he sucks, second his followers are the dirtiest, shittiest people on the face of the planet.
There are also tons of smaller festivals that are mostly local acts with a few national ones. Camp Barefoot was fucking awesome this past year. Two nights of lotus, hackensaw boys, pgroove, john brown's body. plus the scene was awesome, plenty of doses and no mafia. but there was still a tank, but the dudes selling it were pretty nice guys.
There is also a festival in Floyd, virginia called floydfest. this past summer blues traveler headlines and les stround (survivorman) came out and did a harmonica battle with john popper.
but yeah, Jambase.com is a great resource for festivals and all your other jam scene needs.

Haha, and you feel strongly enough about this to display it in your user name? Not hatin', just found that interesting.

Did you read what I wrote below the video of Sherwood forest? Anything. And lots of it. You may have to poke around a bit for some stuff. I was only offered heroin once, aside from that crack and PCP were the only mainstream drugs I didn't hear word of. I'm sure you could get whatever though if you asked around.
Prices are great. There's so many drugs around that if you aren't satisfied with someones prices you can just wait 5 minutes until the next offer. And the dealers know this. Plus you can haggle with most people too. The drugs sell themselves at these festivals, so people are more willing to cut deals if you're cool with them. I traded one dude a hot dog for a line of molly.
The bud is phenomenal. By the end of the first day I was turning down weed that I would kill for back home. It seemed like each person I talked to had better and better shit. Lots of hash going around as well.

Yeah, this. It's a much shorter drive for me :). I've never been myself, as I always seem to end up having no time to go to it, but I can definitely vouch for it. Quite a few of my friends have gone and they all LOVE it. I mean really, really love it. I'd like to go in 2010 barring any unforeseen stuff. There's no commercialism, and it is the perfect place for tripping - everything is more or less designed for it too. Plenty of E, acid, shrooms, weed, etc going around... it's probably a lot harder to not find drugs there than to find them. You should know that alcohol is not allowed and there's a good chance you'll get shit from someone if you drink publicly. Again, going on my friends' experiences here, but I know it would be aaawesome.
If you're in BC, Washington, Oregon, N California, Idaho, Alberta, or anywhere around those places, it's definitely driveable. There's some good vids up on youtube including a longish documentary, check it out.

Good list Psynthetic! I hit up Rothbury, Camp Bisco, GotV, Summerdance (at Nelson Ledges), Wormtown, and Phish festival 8 this year.
I highly recommend Rothbury - there's really nothing like it, as has been said before. If you're looking for a 'big' festival experience I'd say put your money towards Roth for sure. I've heard good and bad things about Bonnaroo, but personally I don't think I'd ever spend the money to go there.
I really enjoy smaller festivals though. Summerdance (two nights of Lotus, EOTO, Telepath) takes place at Nelson Ledges, which, in my opinion, is by far one of the best music/festival locations in the country. The stage is right on the beach, you can go cliffjumping and swimming during the day, you camp in the woods, and the people are some of the friendliest I've ever met at a fest before.
Strangecreek and Wormtown are held in May and September, respectively, in Greenfield, MA. Also both small festivals, probably not worth it if you're not already around the Northeast. But still an amazing vibe, great music, great people.
Some more smaller, jamband/electronic-oriented fests include Up North in VT, PhanPhest in PA, Langerado in FL, Desiderata in NY, Let it Roll in NY, Trinumeral in NC, Bear Creek in FL...
This might help you out as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_jam_band_music_festivals
A note on Vibes - I will never waste money on this festival again. The only reason I've gone the past two years is because it's held in the town over from me. I paid for a ticket last year but this year I worked the staff cafeteria 4 hrs/day because I thought shelling out $200 for a ticket was nonsense. Honestly, it's a sketchy fucking scene at this place - Bridgeport is not a nice city, and all the thugs and fucked up people can get cheap tickets (because they live in Bpt) and come in and sell shitty nitrous and sketchy drugs. Vibes is the only festival where I've ever had someone offer me crack and heroin before. It's also infested with rich, teenybopper sort of kids from the surrounding towns, including kids I went to school with, who have no interest in the music whatsoever and just come to get fucked up and "be a hippie" for the weekend. It just bugs me seeing people decked out in tiedye and facepaint, fucked out of their minds and dancing, and knowing that if I asked them who was playing or who they were looking forward to seeing they wouldn't be able to answer.
Also to the OP - I don't know if you've been to festival before, but please make sure that you bring enough food/enough money to buy vendor food. You can't just survive on straight drugs all weekend...one of my personal rules for being at a festival is to make sure you get a good, filling meal in before you eat your drugs and head out to the music for the night. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble if you take care of your body while you're there.
I personaly love Rothbury, went the first year it was open and this year too, so uhh both were fucking great, and its in michigan so seeing the lakes is cool beacuse the campsite is by the lake.
Bonaroo is fun, yeah its kinda gotten big, still fun though ive only been twice.
Wakarusa is pretty fucking good, the first year I went was great I also went when it was in Arkansas it was good but had a higher police presence.
If you ever near Missouri go to schwag stock, one of the best grassroots festies I go to, its once a month all summer from april to october "october its called spook stock"
Really though if the line up is good I will go just about anywhere.
If your into JAM bands check out Phish, I just got back from LA seeing them.
I should write a festivel report =P

You live in Chicago.
Blottofest is in the bumfuck outer edges of the metropolitan area, in South Elgin. Last year I took the metra out there from the south side of the city (Rock Island line)to lasalle downtown and biked to Union Station from which I took the line out to Elgin, and from there biked to South Elgin. Note it's not the best idea, as I almost got hit a bunch of times and I rode a small-ass bike and no helmet
And it was a long ride in hilly areas. Get a motorized scooter or find a ride :p
Chicago Peace fest is in june or so and in Lincoln Park on the near north side of the city. The actual Lincoln Park, not the neighborhood. south end.
EDIT: both are free, though in the case of Blottofest i inadvertently biked from a forest preserve entrance not seeing the 'main' entrance down the street. Apparently I would've gotten charged ~$10 if I was there. Or not, I think you're charged if you camp there. Basically you can go to that forest preserve slightly north of the actual fest and park there and walk to the fest avoiding the people by the Vasa Park gate.

Haha, you must've missed the bike path. There's a bike path literally right across the river from the Elgin Metra stop, and it takes you straight to Vasa park. It's a 15 mile ride at most.

I know of Shambala, which takes place near me. I have never been. Also there is The Salmon Arm Roots and Blues. It is more catered to everyone, even a metalhead can have a good time.

And the trail goes across the river at some point?

Yep, it's on the east side of the river in Elgin, crosses the river in downtown South Elgin, then goes through the forest preserve, then right past the entrance of Vasa park.

Anyway I know a few more if you're interested, but, mostly west coast and more electronic than hippy centered (there's a lot of overlap though).
Also if you're going to burning man, i'll see you there, look for the kid on acid
The Rainbow Gathering in Ocala National Forest in Central Florida. I heard amazing shit about it from a dude I was locked up with.
I've never been to a gathering, passed quite a few up, but I generally run in to a lot of "rainbow kids" being a transient myself, and I know a lot of crusties that go too, and they're supposed to be loads of fun.
I know a ton of people going to Ocala, its supposed to be off the chain. One thing I've been told though is to always bring extra food...and expect to indulge in a ridiculous amount of drugs.
If you're into hippy shit, go to a gathering

The Bonnaroo lineup was supposed to be posted tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it's been delayed a week to the 9th. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for the Flaming Lips, that really would make the $250 ticket and 12 hour trip from Delaware all worth it.

It's 100% hipster and 0% hippie but the pitchforkmusicfestival in chicago has had freakin DOPE lineups, and is ridiculously low priced. I'd love to go even though I live in california.

can't help but say I'm a little disappointed with Bonnaroo's lineup. I was really expecting something big to be announced (Neil Young, Pavement, Broken Social Scene, or Arcade Fire all seemed like good, almost certain in Young's case, shots for a spot) but instead Dave Matthews and Kings of Leon are the first two bands listed. There also seem to be some pretty glaring bands missing in the undercard and the headliners really don't compare to Coachella's. Even still, the thought of a double Flaming Lips set starting at midnight is extremely tempting and there are still 20 or so bands I listen to and like on the lineup. Plus it's just as much about the experience as it is the music, so I'd still have a good time.
Pitchfork seems like it'll be a good backup if I decide against Bonnaroo. It's much cheaper per ticket and just as long of a drive.

Aside from electronic music "pitchfork" bands are my fucking favorite general music type, by FAR. and 90 dollars for the insanely good bands, for THREE DAYS, is ridiculously good. not to mention it's in the middle of chicago, which is pretty cool.
hippy shit is fun but if im going to cross the country for a festival it's definitely going to be for pitchfork's.

Lol. Pitchfork is FREE. Well it was last year. The costs come in from niggas haggling and jacking up the prices later on by collecting them somehow. elling 50-80 dollars/ticket/

Pitchfork is free. At least it was last year. Just get to it before the other people get to it

Last year Pitchfork was full of Hipsters, I fucking swear. Some of them had their I-phones and whatnot w/them. There were non-hipsters there and IIRC genuine 'hippies', several of the bike messengers "hung out" there for the fest. But yeah hipsters going there/leaving off Taxis. Then again the fest takes place in Union Park in near west side of Chicago aka hipster place w/high-rise condos and shit..

Id be so down to go to AllGood but there ticket prices are outrageous and already sold out excluding the 4th day.
The concept of being at a fest frying out and just staring up at Dr.dog while they play the most layed back music you'd ever want to hear while outdoors.
It's the only thing having me really lusting to go to this despite the price
God i love Dr.dog

I'm thinking of going to Lightning in a Bottle in Irvine CA.
http://lightninginabottle.org/
Coachella seems overpriced and gay, way too mainstream.
Lightning in a Bottle, from what I hear, is more like burning man than a popfest.
I haven't heard of a lot of the people on their lineup, but I've heard of OTT, EOTO, and Bluetech, and that is sure to be extremely awesome.
You should PM me if you plan on going ..).
