This guy was a genius. He is easily my favourite artist, wrote in so many different styles and an almost unbelievable amount of albums released.

Songs like Dumb All Over couldn't be more relevant if written today (instead of written 20+ years ago). Best album in my opinion is Apostrophe (check it out if you haven't heard it) and his versions of Purple Haze and Sunshine of Your Love from The Best Band you Never Heard... are way better than the originals.

Also one of the best live shows I've seen (on DVD - never had the luck to see him in real life unfortunately). I did manage to see Zappa plays Zappa in London and Amsterdam though - his son Dweezil and many of Frank's old band members (including Bozzio) it was fantastic.

Anyway, who else is a fan?

Edit: One more thing... the version of The Torture Never Stops with Captain Beefheart singing is probably the best song ever written - try and listen to it if you can (it's on the Cheap Thrills album - released after his death - which is a good introduction to his work).

" gimme that paper, bet your ass i will sign. cause i need a beer and it's titty squeezin' time"
incase you don't recongnize the song ( not you OP, you clearly know your shit) it's tities and beer. funny ass song if you've never heard it.

Joe's Garage is such a good album. Good to know some other people here know of him.

I have uploaded a song (Catholic Girls) check it out if you are interested. If you like it check out the rest of this album (Cheap Thrills - it's a compilation but every song is excellent).

Any of you guys like his earlier stuff with The Mothers? Freakout is an excellent album I think - some people don't like it I know.

Zappa was the very first concert I ever went to [Easter '78, IIRC].

You guys need to really check out his early stuff. I much prefer the stuff he did with the Mothers of Invention. We're Only in it for the Money is my favorite album of his. But any of the first 5 are really great [well, maybe Ruben & the Jets was a tad lacking...]:

Freak Out!
Absolutely Free
Crusin with Ruben & the Jets
We're Only in it for the Money
Lumpy Gravy

listened to many of his albums, and actually got to see some of his offspring play in Zappa Plays Zappa at Rothbury Festival.

All good stuff. All 60+ of his albums. Hot Rats is still my favorite though. You can't help but dance to the Gumbo Variations.

Yeah--when I heard the Freak Out album when it first came out, I was like "What the fuck? WHAT THE FUCK?!?"

There was nothing else remotely like it.

I see no contest at all.

On both compilations, EXCELLENT job by the compilers by picking out live versions of songs that blow the originals away. I was so disappointed when I first heard studio Disco Boy and Zomby Woof.

Are you like 60 years old? If so, that would be pretty awesome.
