Asides from classical stuff like HG Wells "The Time Machine", the only book that I read and that comes to mind is "The Difference Engine".
I can't remember the author, so I'll look it up.
EDIT: They are William Gibson and Bruce Sterling.

The, and I mean _THE_ steampunk book is neuromancer, it defined the genre. Was it the best in the genre? I think so but others would disagree, but you can't say it's the standard which all other steampunk books are measured against.

Was it good? I have it and have been considering reading it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I think it's a small sub-culture hence why we don't know of a lot of steampunk novels. If you haven't played Arcanum though and are looking for a good story, definitely check that out.

10,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Anything by H. G. Wells
Also, it's a graphic novel, but The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore is one of the most awesome things I've ever read.
I've heard that The Anubis Gates is pretty awesome and one of the first steampunk novels written. It's on my list of stuff to read.
I havn't read much steampunk but I love the genre. I'd kinda be interested in finding more novels myself.

What the fuck is steampunk
A genre of fiction defined by an alternate-reality industrial age in which steam-technology, clockwork computers, vehicles and weapons are more advanced than would typically be expected. Have you ever played FF6?

Ah steampunk, one of my favorite fantasies. I'd suggest a few games and animes but for the life of me I can't remember any.

Incorrect. Neuromancer was one of the first and best cyberpunk novels.
"The Difference Engine" defined the steampunk genre.

For anime, I recommend Last Exile. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is also good. There's also Steamboy...but I have mixed feelings about that one.
As for games, I've recommend FF9, Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (THIS), and recently Nostalgia on DS. I've also heard good things about Skies of Arcadia.

I can't stop listening to them and I don't usually like goth or steampunk.
