This is a copy of my recent &T thread.
For starters, I can say from a second hand source with confidence that some of the easier places to steal from are clothing stores, and the clothes have supposedly high resale values; so the purpose of this thread is to see what theft prevention in the form of hard tags different stores use (in particular clothing stores and department stores). Please contribute in the format below (Name: Type(s) of tag commonly used)
Now in Alphabetic order!

I encourage people to post pics of any loss protection tag they see at a store, then post it with the store name (it's okay if you don't know what type of tag it is, I will figure that out from the pic).

ok i used to work in a warehouse for a urban clothing store. And my job was to unpack clothes from wholesalers and tag them with the hard tags you were talking about and every once and a while some one would tag a piece of clothing in the wrong place so we would have to use this metal circular thing almost as big as my palm to un hook it. it had a hole in it and a magnet in the centre that i guess attract the hooks that are inside the hard tag so it will release the pin therefore unlocking it. Basically u just need a strong magnet.

so i know the supertags can be removed with hooks which are what a majority of what stores use but i've seen quite a few UltraGator Hard Tag, how do you remove those? they look thinner and flimsier so im guessing its probably easier.

ps they cast about $57 with standard shipping and about $80+ for fully insured next day delivery and most importantly THEY DO NOT BREAK EASILY, YOU GOTTA BE DOING SOMETHING VERY WRONg TO SNAP THEM

Went to Macy's today. most of the clothes had a tag "similar" to this... http://sensortags.net/used-tags/images/sensormaticinktag3.jpg
I don't recall the tag having any writing in black on their. there was an engraving on the tag that said "Magnetic Ink" and then a patent no.
on the other hand, only about 5 % of the items on the floor had supertags.

REI uses some hard tags that are magnetized. I do not know the name or take a pic. I will try to next time. It was a huge circle, never seen one that big.
The weird thing is they do not have any EAS towers at the doors. Is there a chance they are recessed into the walls/hidden?

If there is a door frame, then there is probably an EAS tower built into the walls. A store like REI is big enough to have a working EAS system, so even though it looks as if there are no towers, don't be duped into trying to get anything out the door without taking necessary precautions.
The tags are probably generic magnetic hard tags.

Simply put, use an N45 grade magnet, which is the base amount of strength you need from you Neodymium magnet, preferably use a ring magnet, if you can't get a ring magnet, you can always use a solid N45 grade magnet, 1" diameter max. should do, anything bigger would be plain fucked up. You could use an N43 grade magnet if you could find one.

These are the ones that I've found. Which one would you recommend purchasing. Are these sizes okay? What size would you go with?
UnitedNuclear.com - N45 Ring
1" Dia. x 1/4" thick Ring - $8 for 1
Emovendo.net - N48 Ring
1" x 1/2" x 1/4" Rings - $18.99 for 6

well what i noticed about tags is that even the same chain of stores can use different tags. the best tags are alpha tags, which are also the easiest to remove if you have the tools.
i wonder now that if i sell everyone the hook for supertags WTF stores are ganna do.... will they change their tags?? what do you guys think???

Very interesting, the only retail chain I have seen with recessed EAS towers was Hot Topic. Is this pretty common? Are there any tell tale signs of hidden EAS systems?

That's what Kracker recommends but it doesn't work. I tried using a 2" inch magnet but it's apparently not big enough. try something bigger and stronger.

i believe it has to do with both dimensions because it is the overall volume that gives it the pull.

Does anyone know how to remove the UltraGator tags? I've tried doing it with the pliers and bending the tag away from the triangle on the top.
Ive done this method:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRIqwSOeVXU
I tried it at forever 21, which has those types of tags and it worked, but it wouldn't work at American Eagle, which had one that was similar.
Am I doing something wrong or is there another method?

Dude seriously? I only paid 15$ for my sensormatic hook off ebay last summer. I bought my s3 handkey two years ago for thirty dollars. There are many sites that don't check if you are legit before shipping it to you. It only takes a torx screw driver to take the alarming coil out too. I have no problem with you getting the tools out to people but when you are spamming almost every forum i go to I have to take issue.

Thread was tl;dr. This all may have been mentioned already.
Try consumer electronics if you're looking for things with a high resale value.
Most all loss prevention devices can be removed and/or deactivated with neodymium rare earth magnets. If you know what you're looking for then buying the magnet(s) you need is one way to go, though if you're cheap (or broke) grab an old hard drive and a screwdriver. Hard drives have neodymium magnets in them. I believe I got mine from a cheaper source than United Nuclear, but I have a feeling UN's are better. Hard drive magnets are plenty strong enough.
Spider wraps and plastic cases are easily removed/opened with a properly placed magnet. There was a guy on totse, I forget now, who made something like a step by step guide with pictures on how to do it. Not difficult. Ask if you are interested.
A friend of mine and fellow ex-totsean has explained and shown me first hand (proof of concept type thing) how to bypass the stick on RFID tags (I believe that's what they are, can't remember anymore) that are typically placed inside of a package. Basically the things at the door are sending out a signal or electromagnetic field or something, and inside those little tags is like a reed or something. We'll call it a reed. Anyway when it gets in proximity to the things at the door it vibrates and sends out a freqency that causes the things at the door to go off. By placing a magnet over the tag (a bit of trial and error if you can't see it) it holds the reed and keeps it from doing it's thing.
For lulz or chaos you could get a roll of the tags, they should be extremely cheap, or you can borrow them from an innatentive employee (while some things are tagged inside the package, stores also tag things on site), and proceed to go to where all the shopping carts are kept and tag every cart.
Edit: And there we have it, two posts up, the S3 Handkey. That is the device that the dude made a guide for making.

Urban Outfitters have magnetic tags on their clothing tags, so becareful when lifting. I went there once, and I beeped going out. I purchased some clothes that I had changed the prices on. They searched me and found the clothing tagger gun, they luckily could not do anything and I got away scot free... it was sketchy as shit though

Does the hook pwn them? Or if that fails a big-ass magnet? SWIM would appreciate the reply

That would be removed with a neodymium magnet. The sensormatic hook only works on sensormatic brand hard tags.

Sourcetagging is when the actual manufacturer (Canon or whomever made the camera) puts a security device actually inside the camera. It cannot be deactivated. I am not totally sure how these items get out the door when you buy them legit. A lot of video cameras are like this as well.
There is no way a plain magnet can set of security alarms of any kind. It is not giving off any kind of frequency that the EAS towers look for.

generally people agree that an N45 strength is required. As far as I know there is no magic size that will garuntee it to work. A 1'' x 1/2'' magnet from a site like here http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnets.htm would work. Either a plate or a ring magnet. Beware though it took them over 10 business days just to ship my magnet out. They are a legit company though.

i dont speak magnet language.
N45 is the best magnet but what does that mean?
is it the higher the number, the more powerful the magnet is?
kracker
02-14-2009, 01:40 AM
The N45 ranking is I believe in reference to the gauss rating of the magnet's surface (?)
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

ok....... this thread is weird. WTF is the point of this thread?
i know for a fact that the same chain of stores uses different types of tags, securitys, cameras, lp in different risk areas.
this is a fact. in a high risk area they will use more security measures, in a low risk area they will use lower security measures.
so ur updated tag list has no point at all.

I wholeheartedly agree with Vinipooh's statement about the different level of security measures in relation to the value or risk of the inventory. I live in southern california, where malls are an abundance. The malls that I frequent in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Orange County carry some of the most expensive items you'll ever find in malls. There's this department store that I enjoy visiting and at this particular store, they use three different types of tags based on the value of the items. Higher value items have the magnetic ink tags. Lower value items have Supertags. Accessories have cheap magnetic tags.
