View Full Version : Do you ever steal peoples 'bit'

Let me explain...

Sometimes I catch people as I have a really good memory, not eidetic but its pretty good. Anyway I catch people resusing identical bits of speech or actions that I that I have used/done (enough for it to be not a coincidence). I guess the person forgot that I was the one that said/done 'it' (lol if this thread seems really petty and lame) and sometimes they realize that I realize they 'stole' and look embarrassed or sometimes they don't even realize. Most of the times I just let it slide.

So the other day my friend made a really funny comment regarding the super bowl game (he talked about how the dirt flew up into the air right when the guy almost went out of bounds during the 100 yard touchdown) and today I tried to use that 'bit' (gave the whole real time plagiarism thing a shot) I failed horribly and didn't incite the same amount of humour as it did on me.

So why even bother? Anyways this isn't something I feel seriously(so don't be judging my psyche and shit) about I just thought it was a whimsical thought and thought I'd share

Sometimes I steal facialexpertions without even knowing until after I did it.

Can never figure out why. Also I wonder if anyone else notices I do this.#

I'm the product of everyone around me.:bluerazz:

I think we all do this a little bit unconsciously. Usually it's people that you're around a lot who have this effect on you.

For instance, my girlfriend (who I basically live with) has a lot of pretty unique sayings. At first I would just say these around her to jokingly make fun of her, but now I find myself saying them around other people.

I would say it's kind of like when you live in a different country for a while and begin to pick up the accent a little bit. You come back home and people start saying "Quit that!" You're a little confused at first, but then you realize that your language has morphed to become like the people around you.

Other times, you consciously steal things from people for any number of reasons. This, I think, is more what you're talking about. Sayings and tone-of-voice or even noises. We all do this, and it's a bit of a trial-and-error deal. Some of these things are more easily replicated than others, depending on your personality and natural verbal inclinations.

I have that happen all the time, once someone does it I KNOW they are full of shit.
Most of my best 'bits' are made up on the fly, as it happens like, they turn out to be the best ones.

Its like its direct from my brain, even I didn't have to think about it.

(I go to sit on a bench at a friends BBQ, its wooden, theres a hole in it,
"Oh ugh, I don't wanna sit here, it looks like a 'long drop' (outside shithouse with hole to shit in)
his sis looks at me & goes "ooh yuk" (why did you bring that image up? I'm eating food..)
I look into the hole & reach in, shes watching me..
I cross my eyes & say in a awed voice "Well, shit a brick!"
She looks at me, like, WTF!
I pull out a brick
She nearly pisses herself, spills food.
I give her a look to say, 'i did that only for you, you're worth it'
----- &
Watching old black n white Tv programme of Zorro
They are in a small room, they shift around & Tonto pushs the door closed so they have enough room to move about.
I suddenly go "ha ha"
They go "whats so funny about that"
"Tonto shut the door"
"So what?" they say
"Tontos born in a tent"
------ &
We three workmates are standing in a circle trying to reconnect a earth wire on a welder.
I go "Yeah, shove that in there, use that as a wedge to lock it in place & it'll all be Claudia Sniffa" (Claudia Schiffer, the model)
Guy larfs, other guy goes, puzzeled "whats that about?"
He says "Claudia Schiffer, the model"
"Guy says "Whats so funny about that"
I say "Well, you know, the guy shes married too"
Guy says "Who?"
I say "The guy who , you know, pulls rabbits out of hats"
Guy says "What, David Copperfield?"
I "Yeah, shes fucking magic"
"ohh, you guys are too fast for me, i gotta get another job.."shakes head.

('fuckin magics' something you say when someone comes up with a good idea)

What I don't like is when someone uses a bit when I would.

Like I started saying 'Take care' instead of 'goodbye' to chicks,
they thought it was nice I'd taken into consideration their wellbeing.
Next thing others are jumping the gun to say it to a girl, in my company, before I can.
I just came up with something else.

Or when I burped.

"Baaarrrrrrtttt".
Silence, the burp echoeing away..
With perfect timing, I say

"Simpson"

I hate when people use material from stand ups(I've heard them all) Family Guy and The Simpsons. Sometimes it's apparent that the only thing these people know about the subject at hand is from a simple retarded joke from Family Guy.

I don't mind if it's an obvious reference but a lot of times they're trying to get credit for something that clearly isn't something they made up.

Sometimes I'll read something on zoklet/totse and feel it bares deserves repeating and I save it for a time in real life when it's relevant. Boy, when somebody I know made a Terri Schiavo joke I was ready from all my days at totse. I went balls out on that one.

I think the game is, when you hear someone make a quote of someone elses 'bit'.
Quote the first quoter (is that a word?) ie, who first quoted it.
And award yourself a 'point'

I once made a joke and someone accused me of stealing it from a film, even though I had never heard of the film and my joke and the joke in the film only had slight similarities. I was fuckin pissed.

I purposely steal peoples "bits", and not only their bits, basically I try to imitate people to a tee. It's fun to do and doing it all the time makes you realize who "you" are and you get to step into peoples shoes and changeeeeeee. Seeing their perspective is nice. Good stuff. :)

I have this tendency to adopt whatever speech patterns/mannerisms the person I am speaking with has/uses the longer I talk to them.

It's a subconscious thing, most likely... Something under the surface recognizes that it's easier to be accepted if you are acting like the person you're speaking with... or maybe the same can be said for reusing others' behavior.

Ughhh god, so many people I know do that shit and it gets annoying fucking FAST. And it's like they act like came up with it on their own when it's so fucking obvious they didn't.

Other then that though like my girlfriend and I both say weird little things that we each came up with, and we'll say them to each other, or to someone else inthe presence of the other but that's the extent of it. It's not really that big of a deal, but if you're going to take what someone says you might as well give them some sort of credit or conformation ammiright?

Everything you make up is a product of the culture you/your mind (ie, your genes) has experienced. It's just that you saw it first, not that it wasn't already there. If I see a new forest, is it my forest?

Sure, recognition for who said something first. But you can't own symbols. You can't own "bits". Only originate them.

I've stolen 'bits'. I noticed it the most after Basic Training while joking with other Marines about our Drill Instructors and their little things they use.(Following up a sentence with a(n) "you under stand?" or a good hearty "YOUR OUT OF YOUR DAMN MIND!" when the time is right). Any way I have found my self and my peers saying this kind of stuff in normal conversation. I wouldn't be shocked in the least if it were some thing to do with our subconscious.

One time I was grocery shopping with my mom and the price came up as something like $42.50, and the clerk was like "That'll be $50.42" and my mom told him he mixed it up. He just kind of smiled and said "Oh, sorry, my whole family's dyslexic, I remember I always used to get presents from Satan at christmas!" and started laughing his ass off. This was when the comedy network was playing some commercial for a stand up comic and that was the joke that was always on. My mom just smiled and told him that he's not the only one with a tv, and he just instantly turned red and looked at floor while we were paying.

I gave someone a 'Bit' once.

I was looking for a car & went to this place (add in the newspaper) where they were selling one.
I'm talking with the guy when 3 younger guys walk out the door & stood around the car.

At one point one of the guys leans forwards & lent against the car.
Something was weird about his actions, it didn't quite fit right.
So I said "What happened there? when you lent on the car?"

He pulls back & a bit shyly turns & I relise hes got a shrunken left (furtherest arm) arm.

"Oh, sorry, I didn't relise, just the timeing was wrong between leaning & your arm touching the car"
They are sorta looking at their feet & I figure I need to set the situation right.

So I say "Oh well you will probably make up for it in some other way"
& the car seller guy says "Nah, hes stupid too"

Oh, uh, what can I say now?. I relise hes probably had this most of his life (brothers & such)
So I say "Oh, thats not what I ment" & without any thinking at all I say..

"Hes probably got a Cock the length of his arm"

& fuk.. everyone nearly pisses themselves larfing.

He stands up a bit & they look up to him now & I relise
that that 'Bit' I gave him,

Is going to stay with him for the rest of his life.

This guy I work with - his only frame of reference for humor is something he heard from Family Guy.

It's gotten so bad, that I intentionally watch what I say around him, because I don't want to trigger something that starts with his dreaded "Hey, that's like that one Family Guy episode......."

It drives me up a fucking wall. When I heard the joke on Family Guy to begin with, I only found it mildly funny. Now that you're repeating it and hoping to get a laugh, it's just god damn annoying.

I pick up stuff from other people all the time and add it to my routine. Funny or clever sayings, facial espressions, demeanor, whatever. I'm like a composite of everybody i've ever known (and admired in some way) Like last summer i met this girl and liked the way she walked (she had this funny kind of gangsta lean) and i started doing it too. And then people started copying it from me but i didnt care cuz i stole it anyway . i thought it was funny how it spread.

I bet almost everyones done this at some point or another. It just seems to be part of small talk, making jokes, trying to get people to laugh. When you see something that makes people laugh, sometimes in another conversation when left with a blank spot to fill you end up using something you heard before. I've seen people do it copying from comedians or movies as well. Sometimes these little things can catch on and become an inside joke.

A Peruvian guy I know is always telling really well-known jokes from comedians as if they were his own, but nobody ever calls him on it. Some people laugh about it behind his back, but most people just shake their heads.

One girl even pulled up an exact joke he told, moments before, on youtube. It's bad.

I asked him about it once and he said it's because he didn't know how to joke around in English.

I know so many people who do that constantly. Somehow everything is always relevant to Family Guy.

On topic, everybody does it somehow whether they realize it or not. It's not that much different from copying a celebrities outfit or something.

Like - NO EXAGGERATION!

The most COMMON LINES THIS KID SAYS ARE :

"That reminds me of that Family Guy episode where......."

"Kind of like in Family Guy where....."

"I was watching Family Guy the other day and......."

Really. AT LEAST 5 times a day (8 hour work day). That's at the VERY FUCKING LEAST. It's so bad, that other people notice it and joke about it behind his back.

THAT'S how BAD it is.

Working in different industrys gets you info that other people don't know about.
From that you can figure out how much someone knows by their langauge.

I heard a term about 20 yrs ago & hardly use it but..

One day I'm at a mates place & a relative of his drops in for a coffee.
I can see somethings up with him, gonna find out what soon.

So after the intros etc, he starts talking about someone at his work, how he fukked a job up.
I'm not sure where this is going, but I can guess.
He goes "& so & so fukked up the job & we call him 'penis fingers' now.

The other two are talking about something, not taking notice & he sees I'm doing something else & figures he'll have to start again.
I say "Cause he fukks everything he touches?"

So he starts again & they are listening now.
"And so & so fukked up a job & he's now called 'Penis fingers'.
I say "because he fukks everything he touches?

& "do you know why they call him 'penis fingers?"
"because he fukks everything he touches" I say.

He sez "because he fukks everything he touches"
I'm "Ahh, so he fukks everything he touches"

And theres silence as everyone takes this in.

They have just relised I have said the same thing four times in a row.
He just relised it too.

He now relises I know the joke, from a long time ago too, that I knew the punch line.
& that he had only just heard of it.

That I said the punch line while he thought no one had heard him.
That I said it when he knew we were hearing him.
That I said it before he asked "Do you know why...."
That he had said it after hearing me say it 3 times..
& that I was taking the piss out of him the whole time....

We laughed, he's burnt, he has to come up with something better now..
