why cant you shoot .380 bullets from a 9mm? i read on wikianswers the guy did it, but it bent the firing pin he said. why would that happen from shooting a shorter bullet?

has anyone else done it successfully?

Firing cartridges out of guns they're not designed for is an all around bad idea.

Protip: the thing you load into the gun is a cartridge or a round. The bullet is what comes out of the barrel.

You might be able to fire a .380ACP out of a standard 9x19mm, except that the dimensions are off so you'd have trouble loading it (.380 is also known as 9x17mm) you'd probably have to feed it in manually which tends to bend parts and damage internal workings. The case might not seal properly into the chamber either so the case would probably rupture or get stuck something after firing.

However, everything else sort of works. You could use a 9mm barrel for a .380 gun and it wouldn't blow up or anything. It's just the gun wouldn't function very well. It wouldn't cycle, it would probably jam, and parts would break. It might even blow up if the cartridge is too small for the chamber or something Overall: bad idea.

Headspace. This is where case length comes into play. For autos like that, there is no interchangeability in caliber. For revolvers, .357 and .38 special can both be shot out of .357 mag revolvers, as can .44 mag and .44 special, again though, not .44 mag out of a .44 special.

I have a Polish Makarov. Got it for eighty dollars private transaction. I don't really give a shit what happens to it, so I shoot different calibers in it all the time. .380ACP runs just fine through it.

^Either the 1mm of difference between 9x18mm and 9x17mm (.380) isn't a big deal, or you're lucky, or it's a screw up waiting to happen.

I think it's a combination of both, the Makarov is built like a tank, and the rounds seem to chamber just fine. Insurgents in Iraq have been doing things like this with a great degree of success. Regardless it's not like anything bad would happen if it kb'd, it's only a pissy little 9MM.

Your hand might get hurt. Trust me, it sucks to be pulling out shrapnel from the web of your hand for a week while an infection develops :( .

9mm Makarov bullets are actually 9.25mm in diameter, as opposed to 9 Kurtz and 9mm Luger which are 9mm in diameter.

what do you mean?

Before 7.62 Nagant was (relatively) easy to get, it was common for reloaders to trim .223 necks down and put in the Nagant bullet.

By "7.62 Nagant" do you mean 7.62x54mmR or 7.62x38mmR?

The latter for revolver use.

Are you sure you have a 9 X 18mm Makarov? They make a .380 version as well.

And to the OP. I think it's been said but a .380 and a 9mm have the same size bullet but not the same size case. The case for a .380 is shorter than a 9mm. Sometimes the .380 is referred to as a 9mm short. That being said, a .380 bullet wouldn't be able to seal properly in a gun chambered for 9mm and a 9mm bullet wouldn't fit at all in a gun chambered for .380.

Ah, yeah those are weird little cartridges. I always feel a little ripped off when I buy ammo for my M1895.
