View Full Version : If Pirate Bay is Shut Down, It Could Take All of BitTorrent With It
http://i.gizmodo.com/5153109/if-pirate-bay-is-shut-down-it-could-take-all-of-bittorrent-with-it <--Link
he operators of Pirate Bay are standing trial in Stockholm next week. Yikes, I know, but here's the scariest part: if Pirate Bay falls, it could be big trouble for BitTorrent as a whole.
P2P researchers crunched the numbers and found that the Pirate Bay's eight servers are responsible for tracking over 50% of the internet's torrents. Should the Pirate Bay be shut down, the burden then placed on the next-largest BitTorrent trackers would likely overwhelm them, causing a chain reaction that could bring the whole torrenting infrastructure to its knees.
Now, this is not good in anyway. I hope Piratebay continues to serve otherwise my torrents are fucked big time.

This fucking sucks.
It's not about the enjoyment people get from the shit they download via torrents, it's about lining their pockets as much as possible.
I mean, I'd be pissed if I was being ripped of by tons of people because of some website/software, but these guys bringing lawsuits are the kind that would be filthy rich even WITH piracy the way it is now.

Fuck this. I hope it continues, like it has in the past when they've had to pull something out of their asses to get through. But maybe it's the beginning of the end. :(

Haven't they already beat plenty of similar suits? Almost positive they have servers in other countries anyways.
FUCK that'd suck though.

Oh no! Oh wait I use demonoid.
I just got back from demonoid and when I sign in it gives me exactly the same error message it did about a year ago when it first got shut down....
If anyone else could verify this for me I'd be grateful.

I use both.
But logically if TPB falls then i bet Demonoid gets more traffic.
Therefore more press and publicity.
And then Aids.

This doesn't look good.

Well personally no.
Especially when you look at their legal expertise over everyone else.
However one of their blog posts did account that they would start to dismantle if the supreme court ruled it so.
But then again they don't even know where their own servers are.
(They randomized them after the raids).
But still if TPB did go down then people will be sad.

They've held their own pretty well in the past. I'm not TOO worried, but it still isn't a great thing to hear.

Thought something like this happened. Sweden has got like the mildest upload/download laws in the world and the hate the US. TPB stated that they will dismantle if the Supreme Court rules against them. Don't take this harshly though. The Supreme Court is like the second appeal so there's still a long road to go. Beside that, if Sweden won't allow them to exist anymore, there's no other place for them to move so dismantling is their only option then.
If it comes down to it, I think all the trackers on TPB are to be cut off too. It would mean losing a lot of valueable data but it would preserve the other tracker servers.

From what i have heard the owners of the piratebay have promised not to shut the site down no mather what the court rules, there are still countries out there that are suitible to host the site.
Since the raid the servers have been spread out all over the world and not even the owners claim to know where all of them are, so the only chance to close it down that i can see is ISPs being ordered to block DNS requests to the servers.
Now, on the subject of the trial i have been listening to the live feed and i can say that so far all the prosecution have produced as "evidence" is screenshots of torrent clients with traffic between random IPs and that the torrent was indeed trackered by the PirateBays tracker.
If they are found guilty, they will ofcource appeal to the next level of court and the whole affair could drag on for years...

TPB isn't going down. If it does, it'll make A LOT of Internet superheros mad.
And the guy above me is right, even if they do rule against them, they'll appeal or just make a new website in another country. They aren't going down that easily.
I hope they have a fucking good contingency plan!

It's impossible to maintain a decent ratio on private trackers due to whores power seeding everything.

What is wrong with seeding?
But Yes, private trackers may have good download speeds, but they leave you open to criminal charges easier.
