Fuck facebook.
Anyway, I saw pictures of him afterwards and of the scene afterwards (Plus one still frame of him flying from the luge to the pole), and I can tell you, it sucked pretty hard for him.

I'm kinda surprised he didn't flatten like an accordion when he ran into the pole considering how fast he was going.

Man, that guy was going fucking fast. The camera could almost not keep up with him when he made the turns. Brutal way to die.

I got up early this morning because of the Olympics games, and because I had to take care of business but I was unlucky enough to get the uncensored version of what happened to the guy on TV as it happened and that kind of thing is only comparable to the faces of death if any of you noobs know that.
My spirit soars wit the Georgian Olympic team.

Guy on that site makes a good comment...
basically, if they didn't have a big cement/steel pillar at the apex of that turn ( where he died ) it would have been a nasty accident instead of a fatality.
Which brings up the question; with all the engineering geniuses and $$$ that go into building an Olympic luge track, why the fuck do they have a big concrete and steel slab ( pillar? ) anywhere near the point on the track where
a) the athlete is reaching max velocity
b) the athlete is turning a sharp turn
I don't have a degree in engineering or physics, but something tells me there should be , in this section, a breakaway area... or some padding, or hay bails... anything but a slab of concrete or steel or whatever he ran into :hrmph:

It was a steel pillar supporting the canopy.

I was wondering why they didn't pad it myself. I understand it may be there for structural support but maybe put some shit around it?

At 89MPH it would take a hell of a lot of padding to make a difference.

No, it wouldn't. It wouldn't take much effort at all to make a huge difference. All they need to do is put up a plastic/metal/wooden screen in front of all the poles. If someone hits the screen at those speeds, they are going to get fucked up and thrown around like a rag doll, but thats much better than going from 89 to 0 instantly on a metal poll. Any sort of ghetto barrier would have saved that dudes life. He still would have been royally fucked up, but it was the direct contact to the poll that caused him to die.

And this, someone definitely fucked up big time and they are gonna get fucked hard because of it. Someone (probably the canadian government) is gonna get sued over this.

The guy I was responding to was talking about padding not a barrier. But yeah, I guess something like a taut fabric mesh would reduce the impact quite a lot. I don't know why they don't use them. As for the Canadian government being sued - the ILF don't seem to be too concerned about the safety of the track:

I should have been more specific. I'm sure they could have come up with something. Not just padding around the pillar. Same concept as the trash cans filled with water on freeways.

It's a dangerous sport. Shit happens, it sucks, but it happens.
If anything they should make it uniform like an in closed water slide. Wear suits made to have very little friction with the safety walls. (Assuming they made it slightly more enclosed)
It was funny watching the opening ceremony. The Olympics is just a commercial expression of each country's aggressive patriotism. It doesn't serve anything other than our herd mentality.
But when a foreign athlete dies, it's a great opportunity to show your humility and sportsmanship by pretending to mourne him.
Fuck you, humans.
"How could this have happened?"

i was watching the luge last night, and Ive never realized how savage of a sport it is.
I am sure that if you were that dedicated to the sport, that you would go to bed thinking every night that tommorow could be your last day.
I thought i was an adrenaline junkie, but man to think of going 95mph while lying on your back. My hat is off to anyone dedicated to luge.
I wonder how they train them/tell em what to do in the event of a gnarly crash.

Either way it's still funny watching him go airborn and slamming into the pole.

Georgia shouldn't get its own olympic team anyways. Last I checked it was just Team USA. They lost the civil war and need to accept that they are part of the union.
