Recently I got into Stenciling. I have only found a few good ones and Im learning how to use Live Trace on Illustrator so I can make my own.

So far I've got this awesome kate moss one.
http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.152126.jpg

this awesome Bring ODB back to life one.
http://wigu.com/topatoco/odb-stencil.jpg

I have a few questions.

1)Can I spray on glass with normal generic spray paint
2)Cardboard?
3)For the kate moss one, should I make two layers one for red and one for black?

Ill post pics when the weather gets better and i can pwn the community with Kate Moss everywhere.

Ive never tried stenciling on glass but im pretty sure its possible, might be very drippy tho...

Cardboard is no problem

and isnt the kate moss one already 2 layers?

also you should think about using spray adhesive to cut down on that nasty overspray you have going on, and if you have any questions about stencils you might want to check out stencilrevolution.com. As long as your not a complete idiot on the forum and search before posting its a very decent community.

Thanks, Ill check it out.

also can you elaborate on "nasty overspray" and what exactly spray adhesive is?

and waht I meant by the Kate Moss one being two layers was, should I make the red one stencil and the black other, then spray on one, wait for it to dry, then spray on the red,

or just make it all monochromatic

I think it looks pretty decent how it is, maybe make the hair a uniform color and keep the red on her face and shoulder?
Id work at getting a little bit more detail in your "Bring ODB..." stencil instead.

And I actually meant underspray not overspray, its what happens when paint leaks in from under the stencil and results in badly defined lines and just random paint a bit every where. (where overspray would be if you spray beyond your stencil and you can see an impression of one or several of its extremities)
Spray adhesive is pretty much what it sounds like, its a spray can containing some sort of glue. Best thing is to get (...damn I forgot the word) "temporary" spray adhesive. You spray some of it on the under side of your stencil, place your stencil where you want to paint and spray over it. That way you'll get better defined lines and an overall cleaner result.

Hope that helped

Oh so the paint doesn't drip. Gotcha So its like a spray that makes the spray paint 'stick'?

frenchman
02-15-2009, 06:58 PM
not quite, it only makes the physical stencil stick to what ever you are painting on.

here is a bad simulation of what your stencil might have looked like with spray adhesive:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/4075/fixyj2.jpg

Notice how the edges are much more defined. Also note that your stencil probably would look smoother if you took more time than I did to cut the hair...

ohhh so its like you glue the stencil to the surface you spraying. Will it work on cardboard?

It sure will. It works like post-it note glue, I love the stuff.

I really wanna get into stenciling. So bad. I've read so much on how to do it, I have stencils picked out, and I have the time/resources, I just never get around to it I guess.

^Yeah hopefully when it warms up Ill finally be able to stencil something. I want to cover the shitty catholic school/community centre (fucking ridiculous I know combining a catholic school and a community centre) with pictures of Kate Moss everywhere.

for some reason.

Stencilling is a lot of fun. I've done a lot but don't have any pictures unfortunately. You wouldn't really need Live Trace to make one, just a high contrast black and whote picture then maybe a Photoshop filter (Cutout seems to work best), then just manually work on any islands. Even that wouldn't be needed. If you were to take a picture into Illustrator, just trace around it manually with the pen tool, then hide the lower layer would be fine.

For 2 layered stencils, I cut the two layers on equal sizes, then tape them together like they were pages. From there it's just a case of adhesive, stick, spray, flip, spray, unstick, leave. Job done :)

2 Layered stencils work best since you can switch colours and whatnot. It's how Banksy stencils work so well. His stencils of people are like a silhouette of the figure for the first layer, and then the details on the second layer. It's just a case of what wall you'd be working on, dark wall light paint silhouette/vice versa. The details on the second layer would either be the shadows or the highlights.

I did stencilling for my Fine art AS level, I got full marks regardless of the bitchy comments I got from the other girls in my class. I think I can safely say I pwned them.

Anyway, here is the link to my deviantart.

Feedback much appreciated. Also check out the guys Orticanoodles and TrueMarmalade in my favourites, those guys are godly. Ortica more so than Marmalade imo.

Use the refixable spray mount as well for sharp edges but de-stick the stencils a bit before spraying otherwise it might stick too well depending on what stuff you use.

Unwritten rule of graf number xyz:
Dont write on houses of worship

also simply using the cutout filter is an easy way to make a stencil, but it is also easily recognizable by more advanced stencil-ers and results in complete lack of style. but if that is what you are looking for go ahead.
My advise would be to play around with brightness/contrast, threshold, posterize, exposure ... have multiple layers of the same image with different filters, trace out what you like, add some in by hand.
Dont only rely on a computer generated "artistic filter"

I used to just photocopy random images I found and keep trying cuts. What's the point of bringing technology into it? You might as well just not bother cutting the stencil at all and just wheatpaste instead or something. I mean, if you're just cutting what anyone else can produce on the computer then its not really original.

I like concepts and stuff and manipulating ideas so ripping things from newspapers and using words and mixing images works well for me.

Find your own style, don't just do it for the sake of it.

Cliche Guevara
02-21-2009, 10:41 AM
I don't know if I was being unclear but it does say in the OP that "I found them" and not made them and that I was learning how to make my own.

Oh and a million dollars was a little exaggerated but it did sell for 96,000 pounds

frenchman
02-21-2009, 09:08 PM
May I ask who the esteemed artist was that made this "96 000 pound" stencil?

also where exactly it states the final price?

Cliche Guevara
02-22-2009, 04:04 AM
the artist was banksy

The Kate Moss in your post:

Banksys piece was also a screen print not a stencil
...

Again, Nice try

Cliche Guevara
02-23-2009, 03:28 AM
lol thats not kate moss bro, thats marilyn monroe, it even says in the article. and by stencil I meant whatever was sold for 96,000.

I win. lolol

frenchman
02-23-2009, 03:55 AM
Once again, nice try..

The picture's file name is "kate185_278784" , and if you move your cursor above the picture in the article it says: "Banksy's Kate Moss".

Monroe had a freckle on the other side of her face.

And you might want to reread the article:

A screenprint of model Kate Moss by artist Banksy fetched three times its estimated price at an auction last night devoted solely to street art.

The work, a pastiche of Andy Warhol's iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe, sold for £96,000 at Bonhams in London.

pas⋅tiche
   /pæˈstiʃ, pɑ-/ [pa-steesh, pah-]
–noun
1. a literary, musical, or artistic piece consisting wholly or chiefly of motifs or techniques borrowed from one or more sources.
2. an incongruous combination of materials, forms, motifs, etc., taken from different sources; hodgepodge.

the point is: I cant believe you are stupid enough to pretend the piece of "art" you posted was made by Banksy, and I suppose you still wont admit you made it...

Cliche Guevara
02-24-2009, 03:32 AM
it was an honest mistake, move on. u petty douchebag and it is art and it is sold here http://www.artflux.com/pp/Art/Iconic/Kate_Moss.html (Although I suppose youd think I fabricated the website, so I suggest you order a nice big stencil of kate moss and prove me wrong) I didn't make it you retard, and if I did I wouldn't be ashamed to say it.

Seriously, I thought it was by banksy, my apologies you twat, sorry if that somehow offended you giant walking vagina.

frenchman
02-24-2009, 01:12 PM
There is clearly a huge difference in the quality of the spray, and the alignment between the link you just provided and your initial picture.

I do not believe it was an honest mistake , it looks like you just Google '"Kate moss" stencil' and are posting the results in this thread and constantly changing your story to fit the evidence...

I now believe you didn't do it, because you are to busy spending your time in make-belief land to really create any thing.

I apologize to your mother for making you cuss so much in that last post...
