Could this be done?

So my laptop is generally running very hot when it's under intense loads (i.e.) a game, so the fan is going very fast to compensate for that. These days it's summer and therefore the temperature is hotter/ventilation is worse. So I sprayed some compressed air inside, but not as effectively as possible because I didn't open up the laptop at all. Then afterwards I noticed the computer is overheating alot, because shortly after loading a game (League of Legends), my computer turned off. I noticed my temperature would rise to around 90 degrees, then the computer would turn off. This is happening within about 15-20 minutes of turning the computer on. At first I thought the fan was running only slowly, and tried to fix it through software.

The fan being broken does seem connected with spraying the compressed air inside, though it could be a coincidence. Is there any way I can salvage it... or am I just gonna have to install a new fan?

Instead of buying a new laptop and installing a new OS, wouldn't I be better off buying an external hard drive and installing an OS on it?

How...

Instead of buying a new laptop and installing a new OS, wouldn't I be better off buying an external hard drive and installing an OS on it?

How difficult is it to hook up an external hard drive and run an OS from it? Isn't it just plugging in the USB cable and directing the PC the load from that drive rather than the normal drive?

I found this one on Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006Y5UV2M/ ...and it says that it's encrypted. Does this mean that no one can view the data on it, regardless of who they are?

I've read that sometimes encryption programs allow LE to bypass the security.

I would to run my own OS(preferably without having to buy a new laptop) that is fully encrypted so that only I can run it and only I can view the files on it. I'd like to start it and get a password screen that will decrypt it and allow the OS to run when the correct password is entered. I'd want the whole hard drive encrypted, and then only decrypted when I log in to run the OS. Is this possible?

I've looked at truecrypt and it appears that it's only used for encrypting files that are on a harddrive, and then decrpyts them with the TrueCrpyt program. So in other words, I don't think it could be used to make a password protected hard drive that contains a OS, unless it's decrypted each time, saved to the hard drive and then ran(which I believe would leave leave traces even after it's deleted). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am pretty new to Linux and have only used redhat at work nearly 10 years ago. But I now have Ubuntu installed as the only OS on my laptop. I am not asking for any specific information right now. But as a new linux user is there anything I should defiantly download that....well just anything you think I should have other then anti-virus and stuff?

Oh I guess I do have one question. I am looking at installing "wine" to be able to run a game I enjoy playing. (There is a tutorial online on how to make it work and I think it was to use wine but I still need to go back to look). But the question is this. Once I install wine will it only allow programs that I tell it to run. So it will not just let any exe in the system to run unless I tell wine to open it.

I am working on looking up the information on wine myself but figured I would add the questions to this thread.

Thank you for any feedback you can give me. I can not wait to learn the ins and outs of this operating system.

Oh and incase this matters in how you answer me I am not a computer novice, I know my way around a windows based system quite well.

I have a gateway m285-e laptop. It is the convertible type where the screen turns around and folds down so it can also be used like a tablet with the stylus. My question is while looking up the specs on the gateway website I noticed it has "Computrace". I knew this was part of the security but knew nothing else about it. I looked it up on Google and have learned it is basically lojack for computers. I have no real need for this and am sure I would end up paying more for the service then was really worth it. I have seen on several websites where people were talking about computrace causing problems with video and I think a few other problems. How this can be is beyond me, but whatever. I looked in the system32 directory of the windows 7 64 operating system for the rpcnet.exe or whatever it was called that I read is part of computrace. But it is nowhere to be seen even though I have it set to show hidden files. I looked in the bios since that is where computrace resides so it can reinstall itself if you delete it or replace the hard drive. There is no trace in the bios at all. I know that it can either be enabled or disabled in the bios only once and then you can do nothing to it without rewriting the bios yourself or whatever. But what confuses me is that there is no trace of computrace seen anywhere in the bios.

While writing this I question if the computrace was just an option on the laptop and was not on every laptop of this model.

I just do not know and am quite confused by it all. So I am looking for any input anyone could give me on this matter.

Oh and if it matters at all I have reformatted and installed Ubuntu for right now. Not sure if I will keep it or maybe I will go with the dual boot with windows 7 since I am so unfamiliar with Ubuntu. I went with Ubuntu because I have been wanting to learn it for quite some time plus I read that computrace will not work at all on that operating system.
