Starting back from pre-modern times, the west was collectively viewed as barbarians. Especially during the dark ages, but even during the Roman rule there was probably a lot of ignorant pride opinions kept through out the region.

They viewed themselves as the center of the world for a long time, right up until Japan got nuked. Pretty much that changed their opinion of the west to be respected for their advancements. Can you believe it took that long? and what exactly has Asia done better then everyone else? their political systems were always behind, and still are today with Communism and corruption making up their upper middle class wealth. Espionage is so common they'll take anything they can get from the rest of the world.
