Or a Slap-Funker if you will.

I've been a bit out of practice lately. With work, drugs, being a dad and trying to hold my relationship together, I've had a rough time trying to keep up my chops. Don't get me wrong, I play a lot. But only for a few minutes at a time. It seems like there's always something interrupting me. So I'm just playing the same lines over and over. It's boring and I'm not going anywhere.

My dexterity hasn't really suffered, but my creativity and endurance have gone downhill. I can't play for more than 15 minutes without stopping. I've got problems with arthritis as well, so factoring that into the equation, I'm on my way to sucking. Hard.

I normally wouldn't worry about all this, as I've been without a serious band for months. Yet, recently I've been jamming with this badass virtuoso guitar player. We're about on the same page as far as what we WANT to do musically, but he is wayyyy ahead with his technical ability. I feel like I can learn a lot from him but I only get a chance to jam with him once a week.

So, my dillema is this: I need to get back my endurance and speed, learn my theory a little better and work on my on-the-fly creativity so I'm in a better position to make sweet ear-art with Steve Vai Jr over here. What kinds of exercises should I be doing? Do you guys know of any tutorials or sites that could get me going in the right direction? Any songs that could help?
