Cool Idea for a smoke grenade

I have always been obsessed with the idea of a truly nice smoke grenade. I was thinking about making something super classy and high tech just ofr the fun of it but though i should consult the experienced users here first. I was thinking about making a KNO3 (potassium nitrate) + sugar + baking soda (to slow combustion) smoke bomb. I wanted to insulate this with pvc and somehow make the ignition electronic with some kind of electronic safety switch and push button ignition. Would i need to double insulate the PVC so it dosnt overheat to the point that i cannot hold it? and what do you guys think about the ignition method. I wanted to conceal as much of the ignition as possible to retain the ability to light it on a rainy/windy day. Any thoughts would be appreciated ; D

Nitric acid without sulfuric acid?

Just wondering how to make it without the sulfuric... All I've got is nitrate. Can I just decompose the nitrate with heat and bubble the NO2 into water with a condenser or something?

Torpedos

Anyway, I was thinking about torpedos randomly, and I was wondering;

"Why don't they make smart torpedos, which can see how far away they are from the ship then jump out of the water to get through the softer armour above the water"

Obviously I'm not well versed in torpedo technology, or ship armour for that matter, but unless I'm mistaken the biggest threat to a battle ship, other than sea mines, is torpedos and attacks from the air. Naturally, this means there would be a heavier armour skirt extending from just above the water level to the bottom bit(keel?). Of course, you're wondering "why not just use a missile?", however there are easy ways to defeat missiles in the air, the Phalanx system, chaff, flares, whatever.

Now, with a torpedo, you could theoretically make them invisible to sonar. So you have your submarine chilling in the ocean and the enemy pops up. The enemy is heavily defended against torpedos, netting, heavy armour below the water line, etc.

Maybe somebody in BB(a far superior name to (There's a Pyro in All of Us) will be able to fill me in with the details of why this isn't done to get around missile defences large ships may have. If a fish with large pectoral fins can jump out of the water, I see no reason some technology from the tomahawk missile can't be borrowed. Wings flip out, allows it to tilt up/down and a small rocket booster to get a bit more penetration.
