The strength of Italian culture and when it was brought here goes all the way from the Black Hand in the 20ths to espresso from Starbucks in the 90's to the Jersey Shore of today. Italian-Americans in a lot of areas and families have a fanatical fear of too much Americanization, regardless of how long of being in the United States. It's a fear of becoming just another white ethnicity that came to the United States, like for instance when you meet someone with an oblivious very Germanic or Irish name, like 'Schwarzkopf', 'Braun' or O'Malley or Monaghan and they explain their ethnicity as "white" or "American". Italian-Americans are deftly afraid (at least the ones I've meet --- even in free loving California) of becoming just another white, European immigrant ethnicity and not being able to hold onto the contributions we've made to this country.
