Not if you're smart with it. I haven't posted a lot about VPNs but hysterics and v0x have posted some good stuff about them. They're members on this site.

You can choose quicker nodes for yourself, but you'll have to change them every now and then so they don't start cracking onto you.

Tor is okay for some of the hidden sites, that makes it a bit more interesting, but when you have the money I'd set up a VPN on a server and use that (don't use any one else's VPN) for anonymous browsing.

I wouldn't bother with the gym. I've made my own racks, bought a steel pipe filled with cement for the barbell and some weight plates. You're in your final year of school right?
