Re: Are all PS3 controllers cheap pieces of shit?
I got my PS2 back the other day...the two controllers I have had been sitting in a drawer untouched for at least 10 months or more for one of them and even longer for the 'spare'. The start button wouldn't work on the one I use and so I switched (I had the spare expecting Sony's shit to clunk out one day) and the spare's D-Pad wouldn't go Up, Left or Right. I ended up opening the one fucking up with the Start button...and managed to fix it (The L1 and R2 buttons are the fucking worst!).
Horrible controllers.

I was playing some Crash Team Racing yesterday and couldn't turn my analogue sticks on (DS2), the button doesn't appear to work and light won't come on. Gay.

This seems so ridiculous. I've had to go through a couple of controllers (the Dual Shock 2, that is), and I do agree they can break. But only after a bunch of abuse! And they certainly don't "explode". Hey that's cool if somehow someones controller broke into 15 pieces, I just find it extremely hard to believe.
My first controller lasted for about two years. This was during my time with Vice City. This also included rounds with such games as Shinobi, and Stuntman. I did get pissed off a few times, and I did throw the controller at least once or twice from memory. But it kept working. It was only when a little piece of supporting plastic broke loose and caused a blockage to the R2 button that I had my first breakdown. I wound up fixing it within 10 minutes sitting on my bed.
Later on, I had switched to using my other controller, as the the L2/R2 buttons finally had stopped working properly and I couldn't be bothered to fix it. But that's okay, I'm more surprised it lasted as long as it did. My next controller also lasted a similar amount of time, and even began suffering similar damage, but it never actually broke. The rubber was slowly tearing off the left stick though. I'm currently on my third controller, and even this one is doing weird shit. Some games the left analog stick faults via registering an uncalibrated input, however it seems to do more with the plug itself as one or two of the pins are missing. But still it works. The problem only happens with a couple games and it's temporary.
So yeah, if your playstation controllers are breaking, it's probably from abuse. I don't know about the PS3 controllers though, my buddy never seems to have problems with his but I couldn't say. I somehow doubt they're far more fragile than the DS2 though.

He was obviously just trying to be funny, but the problem seems to be with the R2/L2 buttons, in my case at least. From my CSI-esque analysis of the situation, judging by the trajectory and velocity, the controller landed at an awkward angle or some shit, the R2 button popped out and somehow this pried the controller open somewhat, only on the upper right-hand side.

Did it snap the plastic hole the screws go into off?

That happened to me more than once

I didn't even bother opening the thing up, but that could very well be it- there was something rattling in there. It's Walmart's problem now either way.

Yes, everything sony makes is shit, and all of their products catastrophically fail in a short time.

He was stirring shit up for the lulz, and I agree with you here - The below only happened after a decade of use (though that's my amount of use which is about the equivlent of 2 years of use for some of these people!). Mostly caused due to that shitty thing where someone comes are wraps the cords around the controller 'neatly', eventually fucking up the wiring.
Thank good the new generation of controllers are wireless!
