Eating 7 "Small" meals a day
So i constantly hear that this is the key to a good diet and losing weight. I was wondering though, what exactly are these small meals?
like a peanut butter sandwich? or something a bit more substantial like a piece of chicken breast?

I wouldn't be eating peanut butter sandwiches to lose weight if I was you fatty.
You want an even better key to losing weight? Eat three small meals a day.

The key is to cut out carbs and sugar except for post-workout and then you can eat as much as you want of everything else. Stuff your face with veggies, lean meats, legumes(black beans and lentils), hell chug a liter of oil too if you want. Calorie counting and meal rationing is for clueless noobs.

Baked beans, the ones which come in a tomato sauce, but I heard they have a fair bit of sugar in them.
Can't afford chicken? Buy turkey.

^ actually nuts are super high in calories and overall fat... good for energy but bad for a diet if you don't ration them.

olive oil can be used for cooking instead of butter and on salads to help replace dressing but it's still not great for your skin or low in calories. moderation is still key. A tablespoon is good for just about anything.

Re: Eating 7 "Small" meals a day
I'm kind of doing this. I'm not fat, but I'm trying to get in really good shape, and with my knees all fucked up I can't do any effective cardio that'll allow me to burn all the shit I usually eat, so I'm just eating light until I can start working out again.
I eat something every two and a half to three hours.
A days intake looks something like this:
A bowl of müsli with milk.
An apple and a couple of biscuits.
A slice of dark bread with leverpostej and chunks of cucumber.
A banana and some biscuits.
A slice of dark bread, a single egg and lots of horrible veggies.
It keeps me more or less hungry all the time but it's bound to make me shed a bit of fat and start getting used to not eating shit food all the time.

Counting calories isn't that big of a deal. If you substitute all the calories you're getting from say bread and pasta and replace it with calories from avocado you'll still drop weight. People say "eat less" when you should really say "eat differently". The USDA food guide pyramid is just an advertisement for grain farmers. You should be getting more greens than grains or fruits, and you can have all the meat you want too. If you cut out ALL grains and sugars and eat everything else until you're full you WILL lose weight super fast. If you feel that you're starving on a diet you're doing it wrong.

Re: Eating 7 "Small" meals a day
^ Completely understandable, but like I said "moderation is key". It's the quick and dirty way of telling someone not to eat a ton of something that happens to be incredibly caloric. Nuts are awesome for throwing on top of salads, just like a tablespoon of olive oil instead of a half cup is good for cooking or, likewise, putting on top of a salad. If you eat an entire bag of trail mix it'll ruin your diet, but a handful for a snack while you're cooking a meal or out in the world is fine. If you cut out ALL sugar and carbs, then you aren't getting the nutrients you need. People need carbs to function, and not all foods with carbs are terrible for you. Also, on no (or severely decreased) carb diets, people almost always gain the weight back at an increased rate compared to people who pair it with a more reasonable diet and exercise. I understand the good side and the bad side of these diets- my father is allergic to wheat gluten, so he can't eat all the normal carb products, but he STILL feels like he has no energy on no carb nutritional restrictions and basically sleeps all the time. There are healthy alternatives to wonderbread. Also, eating a steak can be nice, especially with some potatos (starch be damned) and seasoned veggies, but if the steak is huge and fatty and you eat steak for every meal, you'll have a fucking heart attack. Lean protein has its place y'know
Unfortunately there isn't a 100% easy and quick way to show people how to diet because there are so many different questionable food products and diet restrictions , and everyone is going to have something that works best for them.

I originally suggested carbs when combined with exercise(like within the hour). I don't lose energy from lack of bread/rice/pasta because the legumes like quinoa and beans have carbs, only you're not eating carbs for the sake of carbs because you get protein with them too.

The only good things on that list are the leverpostej, the egg, and the veggies. The milk is acceptable, and hopefully full-fat.
Grains and other carbohydrate-foods tend to make you hungry. There are two mechanisms for this, one physical and one endocrine:
P) They are digested easily, leaving your stomach empty faster.
E) The don't stimulate the satiety hormones as effectively as fats and proteins.
The combination of the two effects is really something else. On the fasting days that I prepared for with a diet high in fat and protein (think "my bedtime snack was half a stick of butter"), I do not really become hungry, even up to the 35 hour mark (at which time I begin another feeding cycle). However, if I fill up my meals with pasta and bread, I tend to become very hungry by the 18 hour mark, and by the 24 hour mark I'm like "DAMN I want to eat the apple on my desk FUCK FUCK FUCK".
And cardio sucks for loosing weight. I don't know enough endocrinology to expound upon the pathways, but I listen to people who do.
They say: Fat, Protein, Strength training.
I also haven't found any evidence that the "7 meal a day" people have ANY empirical or (valid) theoretical basis for their advice.
But I admit that I haven't been looking very hard.
****
But you are having cost issues, so here's what I'm going to suggest:
Fats. Make them 30% of your calories, or so. You'll enjoy great cost savings, because people have been told they cause all sorts of problems. Here are some good ways to get cheap fats ( less than a couple dollars/2000 C):
1) Butter. I dunno how much it is where you live, or if you even use dollars there, but it's like 1.5$/2kC here.
2) Self-rendered animal fats. Find the local place that processes meat - any type - and get your self some of the fat. Then render it. With the possible exception of goose and duck fat (which is regarded VERY HIGHLY in many culinary circles) this should be cheaper than the butter.
I recommend rendering it yourself because otherwise you are likely to end up buying hydrogenated fats, and that's no good.
3) Tropical oils - palm and/or coconut. Expensive for fats, yes, but not expensive per calorie compared to most other foods, and quite tasty.
And there's nothing wrong with nuts. A bit expensive, yes, but much more palatable to eat alone than "a half stick of butter".
(BTW: if you are going to eat a stick of butter for a snack, I recommend using a fork. Shoving the 60 grams of butter in your mouth and chewing isn't very pleasant.)
