30% of East St. Louis Police Department Laid Off

Due to the economic crisis, 30% of the East St. Louis Police Department is being laid off.

This will be devastating. East St. Louis is one of the roughest, toughest neighborhoods in the USA. Police layoffs are a trend that will branch out in to your neighborhood soon, now that the global financial crisis is evolving in to a depression which will thereafter manifest itself in total economic and industrial collapse. Remember that as bad as many cops are, their presence serves as a deterrent to crime. There are a lot of savage people in the USA, and remember that 2,000,000 of them are behind bars. What happens when the prisons can no longer operate and they must release the criminals? The western hemisphere is a ticking time bomb. It is a jungle. Get out of here while you still can, because pretty soon there will be a crash and there will be no way to escape.

East St. Louis (KSDK) -- The mayor said it's the only way to recover city funds, while those laid off have said it's the only way to make their streets tougher. That, after 37 people - including 19 police officers and 11 firefighters - lost their jobs.

On Bond Street in East St. Louis, Mello Freeze may offer relief for some in the summer hear, but not for all.

"My dad's been here at this ice cream stand for 37 years and for the last 10 years, I haven't taken a check from him and I still refuse to," said Brian Gregory, 31, despite the fact that he is a laid-off East St. Louis firefighter. "I was second from the bottom so me and another guys, we were pretty much the first to go."

And they were also part of the first round of layoffs, which was in May. Brian said that since he started five years ago, he's seen the department shrink by nearly 50%, to just 29 firefighters for a city of over 31,000 people.

"It pushes back the response time," he explained. "We can't give the citizens the service they were used to providing and use to getting and I don't know, it just hurts."

"I have seen administrators come and go, many of them, some better than others, this administration is the worst," said his father, Vincent, 75.

Among other thins, he points out that the layoffs add to the city's staggering unemployment rate - 18% - which is nearly double the national average.

"That's why we passed on January 26, from the city council, a budget that included furloughs and not layoffs to do exactly what you just talked about, to prevent more unemployment," said Mayor Alvin Parks.

But since both the police and firefighters' unions didn't agree to the furloughs, like Brian, they'll have to find other ways to serve their community.

"Every year we go out to schools and we talk to kids about having two ways out of every room....it kinda makes me think like when the good lord shuts one door, he opens a window for you so, it's just time for everybody to look for a second way out," Brian added.

The seven others let go were city administrators.
