Re: SHTF - Trading in lieu of currency
The rabbits idea was good, but bad too.
Humans cannot survive on rabbits. Homesteaders in the area I grew up routinely died of starvation on a diet of rabbits (cottontails, and even the ever abundant and ever larger jacks) due to lack of necessary nutrients in them. If you ever skin and eat a rabbit, the only meat that is really worth anything off of it is the backstraps, and by the time they are cooked and done its akin to about two pieces of bacon. You won't live long on that.
They called it "rabbit starvation" come to think of it. You would be wise to include traps in your set up and the knowledge of trapping, for food and warm fur. More wild animals are edible than you imagine. Try some beaver with noodles or some bear jerky sometime.
Oh, don't forget a good field manual on edible and medicinal plants.

Re: SHTF - Trading in lieu of currency
I'd say rabbits and chickens. Chickens eat any vegetable scraps, and eggs are easy to cook/sell or eat raw. Rabbits are obviously good for the fur, which can be used to make clothing, etc.
I'd suggest having(in stock) a means to grow potatos, onions and carrots, as these all taste good and people will be short of fresh vegetables. Also suggest having a large selection of herb, tomato, capsicum, beans, pumpkin, etc seeds.

Don't worry, you aren't missing out on much. You feel like shit when you are chewing it, and you feel like shit when you aren't.
I have tried all sorts of retarded things, and the only thing that has ever been addictive to me has been dip.

When I was sixteen, I was in college (dual enrollment) and I was taken to their dumbass office several times. Then they would call my home and then let me out, and I'd be late for class.
Then I started driving, and they busted me for having tint that was too dark.
Then I was robbed, and they kept all my valuables as "evidence". Took me a year to get some of the stuff back. I still haven't gotten my AK or my Browning.

We got cattails, waterlilies and some plants that look like daisies and taste like spinach in abundance. Those three plants alone are a pretty nutritious diet.

You can't live without fat and protein man. If you went on a diet of just those plants you would get a burts of energy everytime you ate some because of the starches/sugers and then after a while you would start to feel physically fatigued and mentally foggy because of the lack of protein.

Attorney up!
Or contact your local ATF office.
They actually might be able to assist.

I am friends with a whole lotta lawyers and police in the department, but the people who run everything have their law-fu on lock. Also, their minds are full of liberal shit. That's what we get when we elect lawyers to be sheriff instead of cops.
I'm going to try to talk to the ACLU this Monday, though, since they are helping someone else with the same problem.

When the SHTF you do not barter. You steal, obtain by other means, or shoot to kill.
You do not give anything away when the SHTF.
The army will come save you before that happens though.

That might work for a short while, but you are bound to run into some well-equipped people trying to set up some community. They might not agree on your way of life... You might find yourself at the receiving end of a gun if you don´t trade.

The Army might be a major part of the problem and you might be running/fleeing from them. Thinking they will "save" you is very naive.

Most of the military people I know are pretty chill. Only approach large groups and when you do, approach in a non offensive stance, IE hands over head. But it is sorta a last resort, because the WILL confiscate your weapons.
In an unrelated note, has anyone considered Detroit? It is one of the most post apocalyptic cities in the US IIRC...

Like I said, you can starve on a diet of only rabbits. They don't have alot of meat, let alone fat. Ever ate a wild one? They do not have all the supplements you need to live. Not saying that you should forget about them, but you should also be looking into bigger animals. Deer are abundant and damn tasty too
Moose are excellent in their source of essential fats and acids and proteins, and bear is supreme. The fat from can be used to waterproof equipment and clothing. It is called "bear grease". The last black bear I shot greased up my spare Georgia boots, and my buddies pup tent. The water rolls right off.
Do not fall into the trap of thinking that any of these large animals are impossible to take down, or that you cannot do it. Also, you can build a smoke tent, and using low heat/high smoke content you can make the excess meat keep for some time.
I think salt and vital minerals should be of concern tho too. You definately have your plants covered. If SHTF, I would try to avoid contact with other humans as much as possible, but that is just my game plan.

I know this will sound sorta strange but... What about human beings? Would they be nutritious? (I would never eat a person, or only in the most dire circumstance)

Protein yes, fat no. Rabbit is lean enough and high protein enough that if you try to live off just rabbit and plants you can get "protein poisoning"

Also, what if you kept the rabbits in cages to allow them to get fat?
And as far as Detroit goes, it is already SHTF, so you just study how people survive there.
