Does anyone else find Terry Gilliam dreadfully overated and annoying.
Honestly with the exception of fear and loathing in LV and maybe 12 monkeys hes pretty lame.
I find him to be dreadfully awful. His vision of the future is juvenile and pastiche. The comedic elements he tries to play into his idea of a dark gloomy future does not really work. Maybe its too British for my taste, but I just find the whole cluttered, bureaucratic, dingy version of the future highly irritating. (see 12 monkeys, brazil).
hes an okay director, definitely better than the average director, but overall

I definitely wasn't very satisfied with 12 Monkeys. I've only seen Fear and Loathing once, and I didn't care much for it.
I haven't seen Brazil, but that's mostly because I don't really want to.

I've only seen Fear and Loathing, 12 Monkeys and Tideland. Tideland was a mediocre but ballsy movie. Haven't seen enough of his movies to say whether I agree with you or not. I really enjoyed 12 monkeys though.

Re: Does anyone else find Terry Gilliam dreadfully overated and annoying.
Brazil is good, xept I don't like the ending.
Nobody can dislike Monty Pithon and the Holy Grail
Jaberwocky is funny
Timebandits is funny
Baron Munchausan, I can't really remember but Iknow it has some cool parts to it, like the guy chasing the bullet.
Brothers Grimm was okay
F+L isn't really watchable imo
12 monkeys, I can't remember.
Tideland, I seem to remember thinking meh.

Indeed, his only decent material as far as I can witness. Although, wasn't it Terry Jones who did most of the directing there?

Which ending? Theatrical or uncut?
I don't think Monty Python is funny.

You saw the uncut version. The version of the movie that was released in theaters has a happy ending that doesn't make any sense, 'cause what they did was they just cut out the very end of the movie where you see that the crazy shit going on was fake.

Yes it is and Monty Python's Flying Circus, Life of Brian and the Holy Grail were excellent too.
Terry Gilliam is far from being overrated.

Im not talking about his ability as a slapstick comedy performer, I'm talking about his ability to direct films

Re: Does anyone else find Terry Gilliam dreadfully overated and annoying.
I like his movies, but I think he is one of those people that wants the wrong kind of realism in his movies. Kudos to him for actually having the balls to show the disgusting things that most directors don't, but I just don't like it. When I say disgusting things, I mean like the old homeless man in 12 monkeys with his rotten teeth and very realistic gross appearance, the yellow buck teeth and drooling appearance of the retard in tideland (especially when he was kissing the girl, I almost vomited). Things like that make me feel ill, and while the movie might be great, I don't like to feel ill from watching a film. Another example is the scene with the father in Natural Born Killers, and his food stained shirt, and any movie with close-ups of people eating, and the sound of people eating (for example the scene where stuntman mike is eating nachos in Death Proof)
12 monkeys is still my favorite movie though.

Re: Does anyone else find Terry Gilliam dreadfully overated and annoying.
For some reason I completely spaced out and thought you were talking about Terry Fox. What kind of monster says this stuff about Terry? "I find him to be dreadfully awful. His vision of the future is juvenile and pastiche. The comedic elements he tries to play into his idea of a dark gloomy future does not really work. Maybe its too British for my taste, but I just find the whole cluttered, bureaucratic, dingy version of the future highly irritating". The man crusaded for cancer; he's a national icon and hero. Seriously, that's just messed up.
Then I realized that you were talking about Gilliam. I think his vision is simply too British to connect with everyone. His movies appeal, but a lot of people miss the point and simply see pulp entertainment.
