Default Getting Backtrack 4 to Recognize Wifi Card. Simple Linux Questions.

Okay, I'm trying to get BackTrack4 working to test my network security, but it's not recognizing my wireless card, the Realtek RTL8191SE. I guess other people have had this problem. Good thing is, I don't need a solution from you, just help implementing the one I've found.

I have BackTrack4 Beta booting off a USB driver. See this site:

http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...pci-e-nic.html

The last post in that thread details a fix, by installing a driver. I've downloaded the file mentioned, but I'm a complete noob to linux and have no idea what to do with the driver file, or what the rest of the fix means.

It seems like you need to unpack the tar with something like
Code:
tar xvzf rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0014.0115.2010.tar.gz
Then you cd into the folder
Then do something like
Code:
vi ./HAL/rtl8192/Makefile
Then look for everything with a -DENABLE_LPS

Type in su to switch to root

Then just follow the directions

Quote:
login as root, do a:
make clean
make
make install

I knew some of that.

But, I need to know what to do first. I used some program to convert the .iso of backtrack 4 beta into a bootable USB drive, which I'm using. I'm on windows right now, and have the file downloaded. What do I do with the file to get it into linux? Where do I put it? Can I extract it anywhere, or does it go somewhere specific?

I've never used linux at all before, and trying to learn what to do from googling is confusing and perhaps impossible.

I think that you can put the file on another usb drive or you can download the file when you're in backtrack.

I can't cause it won't show my wired or wireless internet >.

But yeah, I figured out how to install drivers with a little help from zok. Unfortunately, I'd have to reboot to get it to work, which I can't do without losing the files.

Ndiswrapper didn't help either. I installed it all correctly, and it said my driver and hardware were working, but still no networks if i run ifconfig -a. I tried /etc/init.d/networking start as well. Wtf am I doing wrong?
