Completely illegal in the UK, unfortunately. General laws on drinking here are strict as fuck.

Houses are dirtcheap (compared to the Netherlands that is), my dad is thinking about buying some property there for when he retires.
I've been there a handfull of times, when I was a kid my parents used to go there for a day to go shopping and such.
Last time I was there was with world championships in 06. I guess it's an okay country to live in.

Are you sure? I've never got into trouble drinking in public, even when police officers have watched me doing it. The city I live in has a special area in which public drinking is prohibited - surely this means that it's allowed outside of this area?
EDIT
From Wikipedia:
Drinking in public places is not banned by national law, but many cities and towns prohibit possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.
It's only illegal to drink in public if there's a sign saying so.

Re: Whats Germany like?
So what do you think then...how much would I need for at least 3 months stay and I'll possibly be looking for some part time work? Not really sure how much to take with me to be honest.
I read that you need a residence permit if your in the EU and trying to work there.

Re: Whats Germany like?
^ if you are an EU citizen you can live and work anywhere within in the EU with no restrictions. All you need is passport or a European photocard driving licence.
If you are from outside the EU you will need to go through an immigration procedure to work (see your local authority), or work for a company that already has an agreement with the local immigration authority (you will need to provide passport and probably some other documentation). Some hostels, hotels and labouring places have this sort of agreement.
The other options are to a) work cash-in-hand (which is illegal but common) or get payment in kind from a hostel (so you work three or four days a week, get a bed for the night and a couple of meals a day, but no actual money).

Re: Whats Germany like?
well, first i have to say that germany is not full of nazi scum. sad, that there are still some clichés about that around. honestly, i think that you will find more sympathisers of hitler in the usa than in germany nowadays.
i do not live in germany, but in switzerland, which shares border with germany in the south. i'm in germany from time to time and i must say it's worth visiting it.
what i think is great in germany:
+ people are pretty direct and straight in conversations, you know what you are about
+ impressive and sometimes turbulent history. a lot of old towns and villages from medieval times
+ beer, you can drink alcohol pretty good in public, there are no real restrictions. what would the police do in times of "oktoberfest" or other big folks festivals? they would have to get half of germany's population into prison
+ driving a car on germanys "autobahn". no joke: if the driving conditions are well you can drive as fast as you can. this car-friendly laws are due to germany's very strong car-industry like mercedes, bmw, volkswagen, audi, and so on...
of course there are negative things too, but i let this aside this time...
and sorry for my surely not perfect english.

Re: Whats Germany like?
Germans seem to be much better educated than the average American. It could have just been the social circles I dealt with, but even this backwoods Bavarian guy was able to carry on an English conversation after several steins of beer.
Berlin is cool, but felt pretty trendy. A lot of non-germans living there. Freiberg is an awesome college city. Good bars, young, progressive city.
Went to Munich for Ocktoberfest. I would probably recommend skipping that unless you go with a group and plan it waaaayyy in advance. We went last minute, spent ALOT and walked around for 2 hours before we were allowed to buy a beer. Germans love their rules and regulations. City of Munich was great though.
One word of advice. Please don't be that ignorant douche that brings up Nazi shit. The younger generations have years of schooling that guilt and shame the crap out of them for the sins of their grandparents.
By the way, their cops do not mess around and don't expect the freedom or privacy you get if you live in the US. We got pulled over on the Autobahn, they searched all our bags and made this guy drop his pants and lift his balls to prove he wasn't trafficking drugs!
An amount of money to bring is going to be hard to calculate with out knowing where you'll live.
