Help an old soldier get back in shape?
So, I'll give you a little back story. When I was eighteen, I was in pretty sharp shape. I was playing nationals-grade ice hockey, and serving in the army as a recon scout with an infantry platoon, and training in martial arts three nights a week (karate, kenjutsu and aikido). I wasn't some turbo-buff superman, but I was lean (~83kgs, 6 foot 1), and had great cardio. I wound up leaving the army due to injury, which damaged my ankles - I can't do protracted ballistic exertion on them without suffering debilitating pain for days, which means no running. I was a regular tobacco smoker at the time.
Anyway, I eventually drifted away from both hockey and martial arts, and spend a year or so just smoking a heap of meth and not doing much else. I lost all my muscle, and all my remnant skin fat. Bag o bones, I'm sure you know how it goes. When I stopped, about six months ago, I got my appetite back, but didn't go out much. I was about seventy kilos then. I've been cooking a lot to keep myself busy, and have put on a lot of weight (at time of writing, 90kg). In the past two weeks or so, I've taken up karate again, started rock-climbing on weekends and quit smoking cigarettes. Understandably, I've been feeling fairly destroyed trying to keep up with my old level of training. I'm trying to cut down on my diet, but I'd rather eat smarter, not just eat less. Can you guys help me put together a food and exercise regime to burn off this extra paunch?

I want to get in shape is pretty vague man. I'd recommend doing a strength training program like starting strength or another 3x5 / 5x5 program to build your base back up. Throw in a little cardio with your martial arts and you should see improvement quickly.

I'm looking for suggestions for cardio other then running - And what exactly is a 3x5 / 5x5 program?

What was it like quitting meth? Assuming you have? It's always portrayed as one of those point of no return drugs, 'Not even once' and all that shit. Interesting to see somebody so aloof when talking about their time smoking it. I don't know shit about food or exercise, I'm a vegan, I try and eat lots of high in protein beans and soya products, with lots of leafy green stuff, pasta and bread, and rice milk fortified with different vitamins. I feel ok, need to put on weight though.

Strength training program, much better than a cardio program imo. I stay lean while eating like shit with mostly strength training and only supplementary cardio and martial arts as well.

Re: Help an old soldier get back in shape?
I'll bite OP.
Swim for cardio, or get a bike. If you don't have a pool or a friend with one then join the YMCA (if they have them up there), 30$ a month for a pool and gym is a fine deal you can likely also score a deal since your a vet.
Cardio for 30~45min a day and lift heavy compound lifts, Bench, overhead press, squat, deadlift and lat pull, you know all that good shit.
You probably won't need to cut your cal intake since your burning more with working out and all.
Its good that you're cooking, increase your fiber intake and make sure your getting good fats in your diet from nuts, fish and the like.
Lose your junkie friends and replace them with people who like to work out, make a gym buddy that will make sure you get to the gym and do work it, helps heaps with motivation.
Thanks for serving, was your MOS 11B?
And never forget getting back in shape sucks way more than staying in shape.
Also what the fuck people, Totse and Zoklet used to be a source of support and inspiration for crazy people, now it seems more like its full of asshats.

I had some fairly intense life upheavals at the time when I quit, so I was thoroughly motivated to do so, but I didn't find it too hard. I've always thought I had pretty strong character, and I was really affirming and positive to be able to test it by quitting and staying sober.

I already have lost all my junkie friends thankfully, I'm back to hanging out with my crew from younger days, who are mostly martial arts freaks and programming geeks, they're the guys I go rock climbing with.
Bike riding is a great idea, I'm going back to college now to finish my degree so I'll grab one and start riding there and back every day.
And I don't know how the MOS system in the US compares, I served here in Australia. But thanks for the support, and taking the time to answer properly anyway

Increase fish intake.
Increase vegetables.
Lifting weights is equal and probably better than Cardio for fat loss.
But just do what you enjoy.
The key is getting started, and then just doing it on a nearly daily basis.

I am a soon-to-be unemployed bum, therefore I am already 1 step closer to retirement, aka death.
I intend to hopefully commence cross country speed marches soon, time limits and the like. No running, just moving as fast as I can through the given terrain with a slight load(I'd guess I'll use my field order stuff, that holes about the weight and equipment I need ~10kg). Aussie bush is a notoriously pain in the arse experience, and not because the natives rape you. If you ever come here and someone says stay away from the parrot bush, they mean it. It is spikey as fuck.

Yea I started college to in exercise science and than moved to fitness and human performance before moving out of kinesiology completely. Its amazing how fucked up peoples ideas about working out are after years of reading magazines and watching tv shows and jumping from one fad to the next.
Nothing drives me more nuts than being at the gym that have no fucking idea what they are talking about "teaching" someone else. Stupidity breeds itself impressively fast.
