America now has the perfect chance to rebuild its economy
If there is a better place for this, mods, someone move it please.
I think that with the recent events in Japan, the American economy now has the perfect opportunity to rebuild itself. Over the years, American indutry and manufacturing have fallen to the wayside and been replaced by foreign-made goods. Why not take this chance to build some more factories and take back that sector of the world market now that the industrial capabilities of Japan have been taken down a notch? it's not much, and it's not going to solve the problem, but if we were to bring back some good hard work to America maybe the trend would continue. It's a start. This is a nation of people that are sometimes ridiculously proud, if we start making our own shit again then maybe that pride will kick in and we will once again realize that it's better for us not to rely on everyone else... Japan can buy OUR cars.
Or is this an overly simplistic POV?

or how about we hault the manufacturing process altogether and build a world community of love, and we take all of that money we spend on useless things and put it to feeding every human mouth on this planet

Obscuredbyclouds, feed their mouths with a fat ass dick, perhaps.
America can run on a farming/information/tech economy. It is better to have the chinese produce shit for us for pennies on the dollar. Having a manufacturing base would be counterproductive, we rely on others for that.

Japanese goods > american goods
Ever see the movie Gung Ho? Americans are fat lazy hicks that make low quality shit. They attach four cheeseburgers to a banjo with bubblegum and call it a car. The "american pride" is either dead or just bullshit that old people still spew. America sucks.

We should just start mass producing nuclear arms and sell them to all the other countries. Of course they will be delivered by their own propulsion systems to save on shipping (they are heavy as shit!)

It's very simplistic. Saying Japan still isn't a manufacturing leader cause of an earthquake, the country is HUGE there are TONS of people still working.
And if the US started to produce more goods (wait it already doesn't have shit loads of exports??) then the change is so minor in the greater scheme of things.
What I'm trying to say is, the world is much bigger then you imagine. These changes are insignificant... if the US built a shit ton of factories it would effect the economy at about 0.1% - 0.3% change, and would spend dozens years of paying off the bills and wages to get it started.

I'm speaking from more of a mindgame point of view. Lots of dumb rednecks will think "Whoo America Fuck Yeah" because we build a couple thousand more cars and maybe this will kickstart a more fundamental change. This is, after all, the same country that can't pass a budget based off of a 1% argument because "we need to get out of debt"
