Bath Salt Sales Banned in NY

The ban takes effect immediately. It comes less than a month after Suffolk County lawmakers passed a similar ban on bath salt sales in that county.

The salts are sold for $20 in 2-gram pouches under names like White Lightening, Snow Leopard, Tranquility, Zoom, Ivory Wave, Red Dove, Vanilla Sky.

They contain a number of synthetic chemicals including MDPV (methylenedioxypyrovalerone ) and mephedrone, a stimulant, according to health officials.

The federal Drug Enforcement Agency had labled MDPV a “drug of concern.” There has been a reported 700-percent increase in calls concerning bath salts from last year through this month to poison centers and several cases have resulted in death, although none on Long Island.
