well more of scrap in general then just copper, but contact all hositals, dentists, plastic surgeons, medical equip sales reps and resstaurants and tell them to hook you up with broken sterilizers or dishwashers, through wexp they will have no problem as long as you pick it up. then just seperate stainless copper and brass. the surgical sterilizers in hospitals are almost 1000 pounds.

i forgot to mention wear a good pair of gloves because you will have to rip out fiberglass insulation. the only place i can think of with an abundance of copper has been mentioned several times.. Abandoned houses the plumbing will hopefully be copper not pvc and there will be a shit ton of wiring which will either be copper or aluminum. both are valuable but you will get shit prices unless you dtrip them which is extremely time consuming, and if you have anothr source of income not worth it

A few good places;
Old houses;the old copper boilers in them along with copper piping
Building sites; it's amazing how much copper wiring and pipes are just left lying around
builders/plumbers merchants;more risky but bigger payoff
here in the uk many of the backstreet scrap metal dealers couldn't give two fucks where you got it from, break up your load and take it to serveral of these

Take the wire with insulation and go out in a rural area and burn the insulation off. #2 copper gets bullshit prices ($0.50 per pound) compared to #1 ($3.50 per pound). Those are just avg. prices from back when I worked in construction, could be more, could be less, but I don't imagine by too much.

Stripping abandoned houses as mentioned is a great bang for your buck method. There is an increased chance that the ex-residents have already ripped all the copper out though.

Houses that are currently being built are a good target. Very easy to break into.

Cool Re: The Official Stealing Copper Thread

Stealing copper if for CrackHeads.

With that said, lets just dive into this subject. Copper prices have dropped from 5 years ago. You will get anywhere from a $1.50 to $2.50 a pound depending on the type of ‘dirty’ copper. This is a shit load of work for a very small pay out.

A typical 2000 sq foot home with a craw / basement will net you about 25lbs of copper pipe. After you pull up to the house and turn off the water at the street you need to gain access to the craw / basement area. With a cordless reciprocating saw it will take you about 30 minutes to remove all the pipes. Pull them out and load up a truck. You made $50.

Stripping wire is the biggest pain in the world. It is now illegal to burn the wire and a lot of scrap dealers will no longer take burned wire. Think EPA fines if found on their property … doesn’t mean you wont find one who isn’t willing to barrel it to China.

So you want uncoated wire or heavy wire that is worth striping. Think Power lines. Sub stations or the best … cell phone towers in isolated areas. Of course with all of these if you do not know what you are doing you could die. I could go into detail, but I will not because some dumb ass reading this will try it. Wire does sell higher then copper piping.

Because copper has had such a high scrap value most plumbers / electricians do not leave material on the job site. If it is a new home you are better off removing the HVAC unit, especially if it is on the outside of the home, then to bother striping wire / piping. A new unit will earn you a quick $1000 and are easy to remove. Turn the outside breaker off, cut the line and the wire. Lift it up and take it to the truck. 5 minutes of work = $1000.

There so many better ways of making money easy and illegally then to fuck around with CrackHead Scrap Copper.
This is just my opinion I would imagine that a lot of are not very creative and working your ass off illegal for pennies is what you want to do.

People around my area have been hitting irrigation systems in the fields around here. Don't know if you would get a significant amount but it sure would be easy working unnoticed in a corn field at night...

You could go to the bank and ask for $10 worth of pennies then melt them down.

I think most of the new pennies being made have next to no copper in them.

And it's probably a PITA to melt them at home, anyways.

Swim knows of an abandoned office building in wich he can poteentialy loot hundreds of pounds of copper wiring.

It his first time ever doing this and he needs to know how to make sure all the power is completely disconnected from said office building.

Also what tools he would have to bring to cut the differnt gauged wires. Not sure if a pair of wire clippers will work or if he would need heavy bolt cutters. And what is the best fastest technique for getting the wire out without having to demolish all the drywall.

Help is needed asap.

Thank you

Get bolt cutters with fibreglass handles, you can cut through a live line safely with them as fibreglass doesn't conduct electricity

Pre 1982 pennies are about worth 2.5x their face value. So if you go to the bank, pull out $1000 in pennies or in other words, 2000 rolls of pennies(that's a lot!) then take the time to sort out the pre 1982 pennies(which I believe, not sure, are rarer than post), then melt down and separate the copper, you'll have at most(if all the pennies were pre 1982) made a profit of $1500. Most likely a profit of $500.

2000 rolls of pennies is a lot.

Sorting them out would take a long time.

Returning the post 1982 would be a hassle.

It's illegal to melt US currency.

Not worth it, IMO.
