You can own the no longer manufactured Valmount Hunter AK varient. At some point the government bought a bunch for the Inuit so they decided not to try to take them back or issue hundreds of Inuit RPALs for guns that they could not hunt with. All other models are prohibited.
As far as ARs go as long as it is semi auto you are good. There are no barel length restrictions because it is restricted by name. You can have 16" or shorter barels as long as they come from a manufacturer that length. You can stick an M-203 on it if you can find one that got into the country before they banned their export from the US.
