Your very own 360-square-foot home for a total of $4,000? Not bad, but it means living in a shipping container.

A woman in California, near broke and sick of paying rent, has inspiringly done what any sensible person in her situation would do: move into a shipping container. The woman, Lulu, said she got the container, which was used to ship items back and forth from China, for free. Then she spent less than $4,000 turning into a surprisingly nice home, all on her own. It has windows, hot water, a lofted room for her daughter, and a working kitchen. As Lulu puts it, in her home country of Argentina, many would consider the house quite nice.

In the video, she explains how she put the whole thing together. From where we’re sitting (a NYC apartment of about the same size), the setup looks pretty nice, doesn’t it?

The home is almost defiantly not up to any state building code, and it looks like she may be technicaly squatting on a friends land. If the home were not built to code it would be almost impossible to get "legal" building approved water in and sewage out. If this were the case she may have been able to piggyback the fresh water, off a neighbor (looks like it because shes running a water hose into her water heater) but sewage disposal would still be an issue. Who knows she may have a chemical toilet or something, hell it may just be a hole in the ground people have been doing it for millions of years.

She has no fucking building experience but she picks up a fucking hammer and does it any way.

I searched on Ebay and you can buy Shipping containers for around £1000 (1500$) but thats not including transportation

Doesnt need to be up to the same building code as a house, as it doesnt have a foundation. Technically, if you wanted to start splitting hairs it would just have to pass the same kind of inspection as a mobile home.

It's not only the poor people downsizing. Many fairly "well to do" people are recognizing that living simpler and more minimally beats having more stuff and a monkey on yer back (mortgage). It's quite popular in Japan for example.

They're just trying to keep their wealth on the down-low due to the economy and poor people starting to realize just how much they've been fucked. Once the economy starts working you can bet the rich will start spending their money on mansions and ferraris.
