Library to loan out hooker, stripper

The Ottawa Public Library will be loaning out strippers and hookers just like they loan out books and DVDs.

It’s part of a pilot project called the Human Library that’s taking place Jan. 28.

The library is partnering with the CBC and the Canadian War Museum to loan out people as ‘human books’.

“Real People. Real Conversations. Talk to people one-on-one about their diverse experiences.”

That’s how the library bills the event, the inspiration for which was founded in Denmark in 2000.

For 20 minutes you can check out a “human book” and talk to them, presumably about their profession. There are some more typical careers available — paramedic, firefighter, judge — but for the most part the shelf of human books is of a decidedly fringe flavour.

“Urban Aboriginal.” “HIV Positive Man.” “Algonquin Spiritual Advisor.” “Daughter of Deportee.” “Somali Refugee.” “Bipolar Person.” “Physical Disability.” “Transgender.”

These are some of the human books you can loan out.

I don’t have any prudish problems with this program. Some people would argue a government operation shouldn’t be legitimizing sex trade workers. Or that these presentations will corrupt the attendees’ morals.

For the record, I asked a library representative if a child could arrive for the event and check out the sex trade worker, perhaps inspiring future career ambitions. I was told the event is billed as an adult event, but, technically, a child could. There are no restrictions on attendance.

I also don’t have any fiscal gripes to offer. The human books are unpaid volunteers, happy to share their stories. Taxpayers are not being handed any extra costs to offer them out a la carte.

Cool. By engaging in actual conversations with fellow human beings from different backgrounds, the people will open their minds and banish some long held and unnecessary prejudices and hatreds. This should be brought to the US and be mandatory.
