And if not, what does cause a UTI? Just...happenstance? Bacteria gets into your urethra and oh noes?

It has nothing to do with promiscuity; you can be a virgin and still get UTIs on a regular basis. They come from a variety of sources, and some people are just more susceptible than others. It can be anything from poor hygiene to sexual contact to just holding in pee, and sometimes they're even kind of random. I got a UTI because I had to pee horribly but didn't get a chance all day, and my friend got one because she had sex with her uncircumcised boyfriend before he'd had a chance to shower...they're fairly common.

Normal sex can cause UTI's. With women, small amounts of bacteria from the genital area can get just inside the urethra and cause an infection. Those who 'wipe back to front' can get E. Coli into their bladders!

Some people are more prone to them than others, regardless of virginity or not. It doesn't have a lot to do with cleanliness, and those with diabetes are much more prone towards them.

I never understood the whole "holding in your pee will give you a UTI" thing. I just don't see how holding it would infect you. I mean I've heard that all the time, but...???

Because normally if you've got a bit of bacteria in your urinary tract, you'll just pee it out before it can do any damage. If you hold it in it gives the bacteria time to flourish and multiply.

This is why you should always go for a wee after you've had sex. Cystitis flares up like a bitch when you forget to do this a few times.

Well UTI's aren't contagious. Men can rarely get yeast infections from women. He can also get it orally. He can also carry the infection with no symptoms and give it back to you the next time you have sex, if he doesn't also catch it himself. But really, you should wait until they clear up before having sex because it will just make your condition worse. In addition, if you face UTI, use ADULT DIAPERS and change your adult diapers (briefs) as soon as they become soiled or wet.
