Real examples of British English being more complicated or formal than American English:
Stick shift - manual gearbox
Trailer truck - articulated lorry
They are the only examples I can think of. Can anyone else suggest any?
It works the other way around, too - I've never heard anyone in the UK call a car an automobile... and we call backhoes 'diggers'.
