Default ITT: We talk about what Martial art we use as our base for self defense

I use a grappling base. The two martial arts I train in are judo and japanese jujitsu. Im six foot mostly upper body so I have a very low center of gravity. I also have a very short reach.

So my main tactic is to close the distance and work a throw or choke. I also train my stand up which is mostly punches and elbows with a few leg kicks.

From first grade through to high school 5V1 me being the 1.

I fight brutal and I fight dirty because no matter what you say or how you cut it you're there to win by any means to defend yourself and your property.

I avoid conflicts. I've been in street fights and they're lame.

Unless I'm drunk or something. Which is maybe why I don't go out drinking much/at all.

The idea is to shoot your attacker in the face before he gets to live out his Bruce Lee fantasies on your ass.

Oh, yes; Oh yes it does.

Oh, and to be clear, I meant absolutely no sarcasm, though writing that (the sarcasm) then makes it sound sarcastic again, I'm serious a woman using a firearm or weapon to defend self in pretty much any state 'cept Kalifornia, the woman gets a medal and a picture in the paper.

The closer someone is to you when they start attacking the harder it's going to be for you to get your gun out. Or do you honestly think all assaults start from metres away with a clear line of sight?

And seriously, you're going to shoot someone in some bullshit bar fight over nothing? That's worth it to you is it, all the bullshit you'll have to go through with police (even if found innocent there will be much bullshit) just so a "bruce lee wannabe" won't embarass you in public?

Just face it, you have no clue what you'd do in a real fight except fumble for your gun and maybe shit yourself.

And no I'm not saying guns are a useless self defence tool, I'd carry one too here if it was legal. I'm just saying relying on a ranged weapon that would be useless in most of the fights I've been a part of is moronic, and probably filling you with a false sense of security.

Real fight? I'm a grown woman, I don't get in fights. I fought when I was a child, but I grew up.
And if attacked, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot.

Riight..., so - what's your excuse?

Actually, I understand you perfectly. You get drunk and get in bar fights and and think they matter and think that's cool - I'm glad you're not allowed to have a gun.

Doesn't change my situation though. If someone swung on me, I'd shoot em'.

I try to always have a strong, maneuverable blade as a backup for the gun. I think that if you end up close in, a knife might serve you better than a gun. I keep my SEAL Pup on my left side, positioned to draw quickly along with the gun. Facing multiple attackers and the possibility of being rushed, I would pull the gun and knife together. You can hold the knife point-down/edge-forward in the left hand and still solidly two-hand grip the gun, operate the controls and reload it just as effectively with some practice. This way, if someone grabs for the gun or rushes in, the knife is there instantly and attacker gets stabbed or cut. I have no formal training other than sparring with friends (airsoft guns, rubber knives) a lot, so I'm not saying I'm some ninja expert. But it works for me.

Edit: The knife cannot be too big, long, heavy or thick: It needs to be narrow, blade no longer than maybe 5" or so, and nice and light so you almost don't even notice the weight. Not SO narrow/small/flimsy that you can't grip it solidly or break it, but small enough to be maneuvered quickly, effortlessly and effectively.

I don't get into fights for fun.

You're clearly slow, so I am going to bold this for your benefit: your gun fu will completely fail you if someone attacks you while they're close to you. If they're so close that you don't have time to pull out your gun then what use is it?

This is a very simple concept and it's almost painful that you're not grasping it.

You're walking from your car to the door of your house. It's dark.

Do you look behind you both when you get out of the car and before you open your house door, every time?

Or someone approaches you very friendly like then snaps on you to mug you, quite a common tactic.

Or do you pull out your gun everytime you meet a stranger?

Any of the following phrases "you got the time?" "you got a light" "you got a cigarette?" means they are about to rob you.

Also, these guys *generally* aren't cruising to rob people, it is just what they do.

It's like when you decide to randomly drop in your local gun store, and you end up buying a gun.

Did you have the intent to buy a gun?

Not really, but you have done it before and things looked right so you seized the opportunity.

I guess we're just city slickers, "situational awareness" is probably easy when you've got a holstered six-shooter on your texas cattle ranch.

I do Thai boxing, Judo, Jiujitsu, pretty much everything. I gave Aikido a go too.

My strengths are 1. Am really fast, and 2. Quite hard to throw me down 3. I don't feel anything in my face, or half my body anymore

I am only 5'9, so Ima bit shorter, but meh.
I use a blocking base, balanced with striking and middle/leg kicks. In a street fight, I generally block, stp in close to throw off any blind kicks or swings, then I grab and hit them a few times. If they start stepping back then I throw a kick at their ribs and keep it charging at them. If they throw a big punch then I normally try to slap it down, and as of recently, finish half my fights in one or two hits, simply because people flail around and drop their hands when they fight these days.

That said, I've spent nearly 10 years working on it, and I get a fuckload of oppertunity to practice it in all kinds of different places. It's just a good skill to have, just in the event that you accidentally fuck a girl who's taken, or piss someone off in a club somewhere...

a mix between boxing and kung fu

I tend to do short quick jabs with lots of power focused onto a single point. It took a lot of conditioning before I could do it without breaking my hand but I've gotten to a point where I can rupture a rib cage with a short jab.

if the person is blocking i simply break their arm with a jab

No and i realize you have no experience in being an armed citizen since you live in a nanny nation that has forbidden carrying, but there are steps of preparedness in between pulling out a firearm and walking around obliviously.

If i'm being approached by a stranger in a 'high risk area' i would certainly have my hand on my concealed pistol. The person who has approached me would be unaware of this, but if a situation arises, i'll have that gun ready to fire and oriented on target before he closes with me.

An ASP baton or knockoff? I thought those were the absolute TITS, but aside from the dramatic way you can deploy them, one good whack to someone in the right place and it's like fucking up the antenna off a portable radio from the 90s, the tubes get bent and it's perma-stuck in whatever level of extension it's at.

Proper ASP, 21 inch, I only used it once or twice and it still works fine, I never really needed it, I could either protect myself fine without it, or people backed off once you fling it out... That said, you whip it into a soft spot, aka someone's gut or ribs and they drop like a stone, it"s only gonna get broken if you try take it into someone's fucking skull...
