Default New Job As A Waiter

Just got hired as a waiter at a new Japanese restaurant. Any bad ideas to haul in more money than the average $8 hour + tips?

I always got a lot of free food.

Card skimming is risky and easily traceable.

Spike drinks? Rape and pillage? LOL, I wish I'd though of that when I was a waiter.

Though skimming is profitable, it is more so for the masters, the skimmers themselves are the ones that are easily traceable by domestic law enforcement.

Instead of skimming, how about I take a look at customer's credit cards and memorize the numbers? Go home and Ebay shop to drop houses?

Bullshit. If you were working as a waiter you would not be making 8 dollars an hour

I don't know about elsewhere but here in Southern California, waiters get paid $8/hr + the tips. That's how much I'm getting paid and so are other friends who work as waiters

Uh I'm pretty sure there's some variance. I'm a waitress and I get $9.50 (min wage) + tips.

I have seen some Hosts that get minimum wage plus tips...

Different business do different things. If it is a slower traffic less paying establishment, I could see an employer upping the base pay to compensate for the lack of traffic.

I saw this on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It's a comedy show so the method probably doesn't work but, I don't know. It's called "double dropping". You print two copies of one receipt and drop it at two different tables. Pocket the money from the second table. Probably won't work but, hey it's worth a try at a shitty place like that.

Depends on the state. Not all of them fuck around with "tip credits."

You get wage and you still get to threaten to stick your dick in a customer's food if they don't pay an extra 20% on top of the bill.

Resurrecting an old thread for the sake of an interesting contribution that a girl I knew did for a while... depending on what your POS system is at the restaurant (works great with Oasis and Aloha)

Say a party of four orders their meals with 4 sodas/iced teas. First, she would deliver the proper check with all of the drinks tallied and itemized. If she had the good fortune to have the table paying cash, she'd return the appropriate change and go to close out the check. She'd then open the table, split the party into two checks, one with just the meals and the other with the drinks, and close the meal check. At 1.50$ per drink, she netted $6.00 extra dollars in tip at this hypothetical table, then re-used the drinks she'd rung up for the next table(s). Rinsing and repeating all night, she often made an extra $40-50 over the course of the evening. When she was done doing it for the night, she simply put them on a table who's paying with card and let them actually pay their appropriate price. Or, if she get stuck with the 4 drinks at the end of the night, fuck it; she simply'd cash them out and pay for them, or ask a manager to void them because the table decided they didn't like the menu and left without ordering anything.

Probably made her a few grand overall.

They don't, actually. Receipts don't get kept for cash purchases in most restaurants. And there's no way to notice a skewed food cost towards beverage because employees drink for free on the clock all day, every day. The soda is always going to be off. It can be done consistently on every shift and will never get noticed. This I assure you.

Well I've worked in a variety of restaurants for years, and some places make you get a managers approval for splitting checks for exactly that reason. They can also tell how long a table has been open, and if you've had one open for like 4 hours they could notice. It would screw up your average table turn time, and some managers care enough to look at these things.

Yeah, some POS systems do have different restrictions; I made that distinction. When moving the drinks she usually just combined them with another table that was open, not leaving a table for just the drinks so as not to affect table duration. Free reign for moving things at every restaurant she's ever worked at. Perhaps lucky.

With Aloha you can split the check yourself but it has to be done at the beginning only before you actually ring anything on.

Does the method you describe only work with cash tables? I know for me personally we use Aloha but only get a couple of cash tables throughout the night. Last night I only had one but the vast majority of my tables are credit cards. Also, doesn't it only work if the next table that you "move" the check of drinks to orders the same amount of drinks? If one has four fountain drinks on the separate check that is to be reused then the next table that is going to "reuse" that check must also order four fountain drinks correct because the customer would likely look at the receipt and if they ordered only two or three fountain drinks then they would think you overcharged them with one extra fountain drink.

bro, contact me i need you, ill make you 2k a day if you handle cards for even a second.

also if your not into cc fraud, this is good:

you make a charge and charge them the full amount and then when you go back with their money you knock an item off the bill before the transaction is finalized. so they pay the real amount and you only owe the register about 70%. dont split checks, just give a refund on the item before finalizing the bill.

this was all hypothetical....

It doesn't only have to happen at the beginning; that's an option in Aloha your workplace has set. The stock Aloha system lets you split anywhere you want; for one thing, how often to tables tell you they need separate checks? It's almost always at the end. Hers have always allowed it to be done whenever.

You can just shuffle the drinks anyplace you want; move the 4 to the next table. If they only have 2 drinks, move two away before you print their check. Yes, you can only profit on the cash tables unfortunately. She lives in a tourist-filled are, and also got a lot of elderly snowbirds on tour buses, so many guests tend to work with cash. On a busy night there were often 10 or more cash tables.

This does not work on most POS systems; once the credit card is authorized, the check is frozen so that you can not ring in a few more free items to give the table, or knock them off to pay yourself,

Rant Re: New Job As A Waiter

I heard from a 'friend' that is a server that a good way to make an extra $20 - $60 in a shift is before you go to work, stop by any drug store or grocery store and pick up a couple or few $25 Am xpress prepaid gift cards. At work you get a customer who is paying in cash. Say his bill is $30...before you close out his check with the cash you got from them, you use $5 of the cash, then $25 off the gift card. Just like you would any customer who pays with a CC. Okay, usually when the customer pays with the CC, you run it first, give them the receipt to sign, they fill in the "TIP" line and total etc....of course, you wouldn't be giving the customer anything to sign, this is now "Your CC receipt - sorta" after you have run the gift card for the $25, you can now add a $20 tip for yourself - and believe it or not - it WILL go through - apparently...that's what I heard from my friend.... So, you basically get your $25 you spent for the gift card back, plus you make an extra $20. Now, I wouldn't go absolutely crazy with this cuz I am sure eventually someone will catch on to it, but everyone few days or something like that can up. According to my friend this ONLY works with AE gift cards -NOT visa or mc gift cards - don't know why....

I'll pick one of these up and have a server friend of mine confirm this in a few days.

Look for coupons online or in the newspaper for your restaurant. Use them on cash tables.
