Going to Med School for the lulz
I've been considering going to medical school at either one of the ultra-rare 3-year programs ( example), or perhaps in the Caribbean, because then it would double as a vacation.
I mean, it's almost like... why not?
It would be an amazing, life-changing experience. I'd learn extremely valuable knowledge about how the body works and how to stay healthy and the like. I could then work as an M.D. (probably just as a G.P.) for a while to pay off the loans.
Caribbean schools are generally cheaper and easier to get into, so I'd consider one down there. I mean, isn't the Caribbean a huge tourist destination? It sounds like it would be hella fun.
I'm seriously considering this now.
Any advice?

I don't know much about med school, but I've tooled around the Carribean a bit. What island would you be going to school on? I know there is a University on St. Thomas in the USVI's.
Only downside to living in the Caribbean is how hard it is to get around, and the extreme lack of amenities. Other than that....it's the bomb.

Smoke weed every day at the beach. I have yet to swim whilst baked as fuck.
If it comes down to it, I'll just build a lab specifically for LSD
You should do that if you do go to medical school. Synthesize some acid, man

I haven't looked that far into it yet, to be honest. I actually know virtually nothing about the Carribean area. The farthest south I've ever been is like... San Diego or something (I'm from Canada, so that's a long-ass way to go for me).

I'm from Surrey, BC. Born and raised.
But, believe it or not, I have lived in Ottawa before (I mention this because that happens to be listed under your location).
My dad lives in Ottawa so I have spent years there on and off.

Actually that's not a bad idea if I were solely looking for the island experience.
But my other objective is to become an M.D.
Maybe I could do both... work as a janitor while going to med school...

I'd have to finish my bachelors degree first anyway.
Plus I'd have to take a few more pre-req's (o chem, etc).
And I'd have to take the MCAT.
It would take some time, but I could be ready in like a year maybe.

Might have been silly to do your undergrad, then, if you were planning on doing your medical schooling somewhere in the Caribbean. Not sure how it works in the islands, but in Colombia at least, medical students don't have to go through a traditional undergrad education. You enter a university, enrolled in the college of medicine, and within 5 years you graduate as a doctor. You don't get the general, broad education you get from doing undergrad in the US, but on the flipside what you do study while in university there is much more relevant to your career path.
I would think systems similar to that in Colombia can be found in other parts of Latin America

I was considering going to med school last year. Then i talked to a bunch of Doctor friends and friends in med school.
Fuck that. It's like 10 years of everything being shitty. Also good luck with Caribean med schools.

I know it's a lifetime decision. I make no assumptions about it being easy or anything. I was just thinking that it might be an interesting option to consider via a non-traditional route like a Caribbean school or a 3-year school.
But then again, there's still internship and residency, which is another 4+ years, and that's a huge drawback. But if I chose a specialty I was interested in, it should make it a lot more tolerable.

Re: Going to Med School for the lulz
Yeah, I mulled over being a doctor for a while. Then a friend of mine who's going through med school gave me a good piece of advice:
1. Go on a bus or a busy street at look at 20+ people.
2. Realize that on any given work day, as a doctor, you will have to poke, prod, and otherwise touch their bodies, including inside their orifices. You'll also have to play with all sorts of fluids their bodies produce.
3. Ask yourself if you still want to be a doctor.
A lot of people want to be a doctor for the prestige. I think that's the wrong attitude. I'm not insinuating that gadzooks has that motivation, just saying it's true.

Also, gadzooks, last I checked, UCalgary offers a 3 year program. That's considerably closer than Texas or the Caribbean if I recall your rough location correctly.

Re: Going to Med School for the lulz
The issue there is that the graph stops at 45 and doesn't go by salary but by total earned, assuming you got the job as a UPS driver immediately upon high school graduation. At 45, a physician has only been working for about 15 years. By around 70, when he's acquired much more skill and specialization, what he's made lifetime and what they ups driver will have made in a lifetime will be separated by many zeroes. Also, you're at the whims of UPS if they will give you that much OT.

I know someone who went to St. James in the Caribbean. Was a lot of work, but much less competitive then the US schools. He did residency and now pretty much writes scripts for money. Pulls in about 200k a year

I've seen this chart before, and it raises a good point IF the person is only looking for the highest paying outcome strictly in financial terms.
I just get the feeling, though, that being an M.D. might be a bit more rewarding than driving a truck.

No, because I plan on living well passed the age of 27. Not to mention "MD like hours" is such bullshit. ER doctors don't work like private practice who don't work like intern medicine, etc, etc. You cannot generalize like that. Some doctors put in 13 hours a day as a norm, others put in 5.
