Default Place for custom-built gaming PC?

Im normally a console guy but im seeing a lot of titles that are PC only that I'd love to play (Arma, Witcher 2, etc), plus if you get the right hardware, the quality of the same games played on a computer just blows consoles out of the water. A friend who built his own PC told me I could build an amazing gaming PC for myself for 500-700 bucks, however the last time he installed new RAM in my old computer, he broke it....so seeing that Im not very knowledgable when it comes to computer stuff, Ill probably just order it pre-built through a professional.

So...what are the best sites for gaming PCs, or do you know of any smaller individual companies that might have competitive prices, but cant afford to advertise as much? Is 600 bucks or so reasonable for a damn good game PC? If you have any setups in mind that are particularly good, feel free to post 'em and I'll take a look. Thanks.

£600 would be easily enough, not sure how it translates into dollars but most components are a lot cheaper over there so most likely enough.

Just buy components off newegg, research enough that you don't buy components that can't be upgraded (eg. buying a socket 1156 CPU or something that is a dead end).

Won't give you exact details but an 1155 socket CPU & mobo (highly recommend the i5 2500k - OCs to 4ghz EASILY - got mine at 4.2 and it never goes above 35C in games - best price/performance ratio of any CPU right now), 4 Gig of RAM (can always get more later and you won't feel the difference with any more in games right now), 1TB HDD, case and aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan would be like £3/400 depending on CPU you choose. Spend the rest on a good graphics card. Done. (Edit: forgot PSU here, make sure you get one by a good make, prepare to spend a decent percent of your budget on this, maybe £100 mine cost - you want a 700W at least depending if you plan on running in xfire/sli in the future)

Personally I would just make it myself. About 3/4 years ago I had no experience making PCs except for changing graphics cards and after about a week of research (most of which is deciding which components to get) I made one myself easily. Seriously, PCs are like Lego kits these days, only part that is even slightly difficult is figuring out where to plug all the wires into the motherboard and all that takes is a tiny bit of reading in the manual.

And btw, it's worth making a gaming PC for Witcher 2 alone, fantastic game, shits all over Skyrim.

Nvidia/ATI is pretty close and there's really no clear leader, changes with each generation. I used ATI for years but just changed to two 580s in SLi, pretty happy with it.

CPU you definitely want Intel though.

You guys are actually making me tink i might be able to do this. Maybe if I just look at the way my old PC is put together, and replicate that with new parts in a new case, I can get it done. I wish one of you guys lived in LA. Id pay someone to help me out. I just know comp parts are sensitive to dust n static electricity n shizz, and I dont want to fry a 300 dollar video card or something.

Anyway- if anyone gets bored, go on newegg or something, and come up with a parts list of what you consider would be your favorite setup for around $600-700.

ill show you what i built should be in your price range.

ram

best inexpensive processor i could find

650 watt modular power supply

decent mobo

solid case with no obnoxious blinky lights

gtx 550

the gtx was on sale for 100 bucks at the time. assuming you supply your own hdd and windows that should be in you range or less.

If you're not willing to take the time to build your own you will end up paying at least a couple hundred more.

www.ibuypower.com

www.cyberpowerpc.com

Both are reputable sites.

Only a couple hundred bucks? I thought it was like an 1100 computer from cyberpower could be built for like 500 bucks. If its only 250 bucks or so to have them deal with it, fuck it...i can afford that. I suppose it would still be nice to pick n choose what parts I want specifically. And that $300 bucks could go into making a better comp.

Ok....I found a lil DIY page online with some suggested parts, and im kinda going with this for the time being. If you can think of any substitutes that'd be better, or things that I could get about the same performace with for less money, feel free to chime in.

Intel core i7-2600k
ASUS P8P67 (whats the difference between the top 4 listed on newegg?)
Gigabyte GTX 560 900MHz 1GB GPU
8GB (16?) Corsair Vengeance CL9 DDR3-1600 RAM
OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD
Western Digital Caviar black 1TB 7200rpm HDD
Corsair Enthusiast 850w (what does a bigger PSU do for me?)

The case and optical drive can really be anything, as I understand it. Ive also had people tell me about liquid cooled systems and stuff- but I dunno what that does. SO what do you think about this setup? What needs fixin'?

I definitely recommend investing in an SSD if you're going to use it for anything other than gaming. It starts up soooo much faster than a regular disk.

Thats what Ive read. I really only use it for internet, some basic photo editing, videos, netflix, word documents, and I would use it for games. If im just trying to run the OS and stuff of of it for speed's sake, would I maybe be better off just getting a small SSD for the important system stuff and then using a HDD for everything else?

Yeah that's a good plan if you need the space of a regular disk. You also may want to have some space on it so that you can install games on it so that they load faster.

Well heres what I ended up getting. If anyone has suggestions, chime in. I went for the AMD to make my quota, but if I continue reading and it looks like the GTX 560 ti would give me better performance, or the GTX 560 2gb, ill go with one of those. Or, I think my mobo is crossfire enabled, so I could do 2x AMD Radeon HD 6870s. Anyway...

Given prices I'd definitely go for a 64/128gb SSD as a master with a 500GB/750GB HDD as slave. I wouldn't go for a 7200RPM, they seem to burn out rather quickly. If you get a good SSD, you will notice a massive difference in startup speed and loading/switching most apps.

I just ordered parts for a new PC the other day.

Case: Nexus Prominent R
PSU: Corsair TX550m
Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V LX
CPU: Intel i5 2500K w/ stock cooler
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 kit
GPU: ASUS EAH6870 DirectCU 1GB DDR5
SSD: Patriot Pyro 120GB SATAIII

Also got a new iiyama IPS monitor. (fuck off)

Currently probably the best price/performance setup. If you're a dumbass and hate on ATI you could get a 560Ti for 70-100 more for pretty much the same performance.

So everything on that list looks good? They had a deal where if you order a gigabyte mobo, if something happens to your cpu while overclocking, theyll replace it without question. I dont really know anyone else that knows computers well, so I wandered around to different stores trying to get info before they start building mine. They were trying to pitch the 560 and 560Ti. From what I read though, its really not that much better than the AMD 6870. And I suppose I can always swap it out later, right? The guy said I might have compatability issues if I wasnt running an Nvidia. Is that true at all? So If u got the same mobo, memory, and basic GPU Snoopy, I feel a bit better, thanks.

And yeah, I think Im almost positive that Im going to add an SSD...they had a 60 GB for free after mail in rebate, but i fucked up the order form and didnt get it. And I also meant to choose extra fans, but i used the arrow buttons instead of scrolling, and it checked the circle a couple boxes down instead. I didnt mean to get liquid cooling. Should I leave that, or should I go with the fans instead?

Also, our GPUs are about the same, right?

If you want beefier performance, strap on a 650w (only about $10 more) PSU and get a 2nd 6870 and crossfire them bitches. And then buy two more monitors and drop some Eyefinity on those filthy sluts.

Ive got a 750w psu in there now. I was gonna go 850, but i didnt wanna sap too much juice. Hmmm okay. Yeah a liquid cooled system seems gimmicky. I feel like in that big ass case ( I want to change that too, that HAF 912 is ugly as sin) fans would be a better bet.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sue there were no glaring, retarded coices there that were gonna screw everything up- like non compatible parts, or something major that I left out, or chose the wrong part for. I dont need top-top of the line, but I do want to make sure I can get the best I can for the money I have, and I want to make sure I can finally play all the games that my shitty socket 939 could only dream about.

I would keep the liquid cooling. I've never had it, but I'm sure it's a ton quieter. The rig I built last almost sounded like a vacuum cleaner when you turned the fans all the way up.

I simply bought parts separately over 5-6 months.....just make sure they compatible and dont waste your money on a good processor.....than not have that much for a decent video card......get good ram and decent mobo and your set......dont think i forgetting anything ....o yea dont waste money on an i7 when an i5 is almost as good well at least if your looking at intel. I probably am o well. I used to have some good guides to buying from when i was looking into building my computer. Ill see if i can find them.

And I also meant to choose extra fans, but i used the arrow buttons instead of scrolling, and it checked the circle a couple boxes down instead. I didnt mean to get liquid cooling. Should I leave that, or should I go with the fans instead?

Also, our GPUs are about the same, right?
lol nvidia must be payin that nigga.

just get a decent aftermarket heatsink its not like youll need to overclock that cpu anytime soon.

Also got a new iiyama IPS monitor. (fuck off)

Currently probably the best price/performance setup. If you're a dumbass and hate on ATI you could get a 560Ti for 70-100 more for pretty much the same performance.
Should of bought a GTX 560 tssk tssk.

I got the low profile corsair. Ran memtest + for a few passes right after install and came out clean.

8 gig for €49 dual channel 1600mhz is a steal

Fanboy nonsense. I have noticed that this is heavily game dependent. Some games perform better on nVidia and others perform better on ATI cards. The reason for this is usually developer douchebaggery where they optimize their software to work better with a certain chip/driver. In long run, this screw over all consumers irrelevant what gpu they use. It also contributes to drivers failing in the first place.

I have had my fair share of driver issues with both nVidia and ATI. It's all part of being a PC gamer. Deal with it like one. Don't be a console peasant crybaby.

I find it a little more difficult to configure than ATI, tweaking Catalyst AI to doing the tedious full reinstall of drivers using driver cleaner, reg cleaner, safe mode all that jazz. Comparing to nvidias which has a clean install button right on their driver install, crazy right? Also, most games out support nvidia right out of the box.

These are the specs and parts for my current budget gamer. It cost me about 500$. Not shown are a Rosewell 750W power supply, a 7200 rpm 1tb seagate barracuda, and a case from an old e-machine that i gutted and cut up.

Edit: The RAM is PNY 1600 CAS 8, I'd recommend spending more money here if you have it, as this runs at 1.65v and has little wiggle room.

Yeah one of the saleman did mention that a few games are "powered by nvidia" which is just a dick move on their part, but whatever. I figured if the AMD/ATi is good enough for Snoopy and the guy at Best Buy, then Ill be fine with it. Although my mobo only as crossfire, I suppose if I really have any issues later, I can always toss a 560 Ti 1Gb in there when I get some more money. Im just hoping I set up everything okay, since the cyberpower customer service spoke really heavy engrish which i couldnt comprehend. For those who didnt see the other thread, my final build:

Im kinda wishing I had gotten one of the Gigabyte mobos though if only for the overclocking cpu replacement deal. Im hearing good things about giga.

Oh yeah- and wat are your guys' thoughts on the new z77 mobos? I was tempted, but being a new chipset, i figured itd be better to go with a more established set until any possible quirks and bugs are worked out. Hopefully that was the way to go.

I assembled mine two days ago. Every game I've thrown at it runs at 60+ fps with highest settings without AA and 30+ fps with AA. Most games go way over 60 fps though. Eventually I might opt for a beffier PSU and a 2nd 6870 because they're so cheap but there really is no point in doing it now. As I use a single monitor, all games run perfectly on the 1920x1080 resolution.

The biggest increase in performance over my old machine is the SSD. It's so retarded fast at loading maps, textures, and games in general. Booting a clean install of windows past BIOS screen to desktop takes less than 5 seconds.

I seriously advise this product to anyone who is looking to buy a new gen SSD at a reasonable price:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147134

Basically the same speed, build quality and reliability of Intel SSDs at a cheaper price.

God damnit! I just looked and I accidentally got the Z77 chipset. I meant to get the same ASUS Z68 that you got. I dont know what I should do...it sounds like itll be a couple weeks before they build n ship it anyway but...UGHHHH. Should I keep it or what? wtf is the difference?
