Default Mechanical fuel metering

How does mechanical fuel metering work for a diesel engine? Also, how is the advance and retarding of the injection timing handled?

This is one of those "hold my beer and what this shit" moments. I've been wanting to make a motorcycle, and I think I've got a great idea for a two jug, four opposed piston, blown two stroke diesel engine. Seems pretty simple in my head, putting the power to a transmission being the only thing difficult I see. That, and finding a suitable pump and figuring out how the fuel is timed.

What say you, &Z?

There was a lot of info there that was difficult to understand but some other views of Bosch units cleared things up quite a bit. I had no idea, for instance, the vane pump wasn't where the injectors get their pressure from. It certainly clears up a lot of questions I had and gives me a good starting point.

A diesel motorbike? Sounds pretty cool. Unfortunately all I can do is watch this thread.

I know, they are as rare as hen's teeth in the US. Hayes Diversified Technologies sold some to the public for a little while, and there is one Dutch company that uses a VW Lupo turbo'ed diesel engine, but that's all I know.

I've been in love with a diesel hog for years.

I should go for a wander around town to the Ducati dealership, and see if Plainclothescop from this forum still works there. They were rumours about a Diesel Ducati coming out in the next year.
