In a way however, it makes sense for the employer, as it lowers their risk, and thus allows them to pay you more (in theory, as their expected benefit from employing you rises).
If they ask for your facebook credentials, and you don't want to give them away, tell them that you understand they are trying to lower their risks and offer to start by working for less than they are offering to cover for that.
That puts a price on how valuable your facebook privacy is to you (and to them). Then it simply becomes a question of whether you and them agree on that price.
But in principle, there is nothing wrong here. The economy is not in a very good place, and employers are trying to minimize their risks and costs. I bet it's not something they came up with just for the hell of it, businesses - like individuals - are averse to change, and try to stick to their existing practices if possible.
And frankly, I can only see this applying to entry level jobs, if you have no history or references.
