Do it! SDL is pretty fun, I've played around with Pygame which is basically the python wrapper for SDL, and it's really easy to get off the ground quickly.

I wish I could partake in this, but I'm way behind and got lots of stuff do before the end of may. However, seeing the possibilities of pygame has gotten me all worked up to really sit down and learn some python over the summer.

Just jump in. There's no better way to learn then by working on a project, even if it's way too ambitious. Just find something and run with it.
Also the deadline is passed, so I'm pretty much just going to throw some prize at whoever is the first to make a game that doesn't suck.
