Dude, completely different games. I am sorta pissed at Deus Ex though. Because of it all of a sudden every game ever wants to be a first person RPG.
I fucking miss the days of Baldurs Gate and Diablo. Fucking Nethack was great. I loved Fallout 1 and 2. You felt so invested in your character and in your party of characters. Seriously, I would have fucking done ANYTHING to save Imoen. Finding out that dynaheir died at beginning of Baldurs Gate 2, fucking lame.
But what is an RPG now? Skyrim? Mass Effect? Bioshock? Fallout 3? This shit fucking sucks. Deus Ex pulled off the first person perspective because it was BOTH scripted and open ended. NPC's would react in SPECIFIC ways to the actions that you took, and the first person perspective made you feel fucking attached to your character and to the world around it.
But Skyrim and Fallout 3? Completely static universes that only have one thing change over time, which is basically you. You start a wimpy little fuck and turn into a fucking god at level 30. Head-shotting super mutants is fucking boring.
I hear Blizzard fucking raped Diablo 3. Have not played.
All this being said, Deus Ex: HR was a fun game. I felt the cover system was made much too easy. Even on the hardest difficulty it's extremely easy to pop out from behind cover, blow someones head off, and then crouch.
We have this movement recently to make games less challenging. I'm not sure why. Games used to be like puzzles, you know? Nethack, has a strict set of rules, is hard, but the feeling of achievement you get when you ascend is fucking awesome.
Now we have games that are mostly like movies, they require thought and participation in only the most rudimentary of senses. Press this button now to kill the Rancor.
